It’s no big surprise that we here at Sporked think the best way to show you love someone is through food. We’re not the only ones: When February 14 rolls around, and Cupid starts drawing back that little bow, food companies go into a frenzy trying to push out Valentine’s Day candies and romantic cookies that take the stress out of professing your amoré.
But you know what? If we’re being totally honest, just buying someone a sweet treat can sometimes feel a bit… lazy. So this year, we recommend you think outside the box—the box of conversation hearts you just bought, that is. There are loads of ways to still use the universal language of love (candy), but to do so in interesting ways, by incorporating festive conversation hearts into your new favorite recipe. Here are our favorite uses.
Cheesecake Crumb Finish
Okay, you’re gonna need a sweet tooth for this one, but trust us, it’s good. Whip up a regular, untopped cheesecake, or buy a good grocery store cheesecake. Then, rather than crowning it with a crumb topping, crush up your conversation hearts and sprinkle them over the top. Your cake will take on all of its sweet, bright flavor and a rainbow effect that’s just to die for. Make sure you keep a few whole to stud to the top, too.
Conversation Hearts Sugar Cookies
Baking sugar cookies for Valentine’s Day? Give them an immediate lift with some conversation hearts. Break up some of the candies and mix them into your sugar cookie dough before baking. They’ll get a speckled, colorful effect, similar to using sprinkles, and have so much more sweetness. Naturally, you’ll want to adorn your cookies with a couple of conversation hearts, too—use a drizzle of white chocolate to secure them in place.
Chocolate Bark Topping
You wanna know our favorite way to hear that someone cares about us? With a truckload of chocolate, preferably combined with a coupla sweet nothings. Combine the two by topping chocolate bark with conversation hearts. Just whip up your favorite bark (you can keep it simple with some regular chocolate and vanilla candy melts, or add in fruits and nuts), and then, before it sets, pop your hearts on top. As it cools, the hearts will stick in place, ready to impart their lovey-dovey message.
Conversation Heart Ice Cream
Trust us, whipping this out after a Valentine’s Day meal will win you some serious brownie points. Put together an easy, no-churn ice cream using whipping cream, condensed milk, and vanilla, and then crush up and stir in some conversation hearts. Finish it off with a few moe hearts on top, and then leave it to set in your freezer. Not only does this one taste good, but the crunchy texture really sells it.
