There are three things we can usually rely on to be pretty good: 1. caramel, 2. churros, and 3. sundaes. So when the three of those things are combined in one package…well, you’d think we’d have a winner on our hands, right?

Well, that’s what we assumed when we reported on Costco’s new Caramel Churro Sundae last month, which had some people excited, and others disappointed that this new menu item didn’t really mark the return of its actual churros (which people really miss). Now, though, people have tried it, and they have a lot to say. And we, like the good messengers that we are, are bringing their opinions to you.

The Good

The Caramel Churro Sundae (which costs just $2.99, a price point that’s a huge win in our book) is a combination of vanilla soft serve, caramel sauce, and crunchy churro bites. It’s a combo that some people have dubbed a winner. “I just had it yesterday. Soooo good,” said a comment on @costconew’s Instagram post announcing the arrival of the churro sundae, while others on Reddit have been a little more lukewarm on it, merely saying that it’s “okay.”

Notably, these customers don’t go into much detail about why they liked the sundae – only that they did like it. The people who didn’t like it, though, had a lot more to say. Oh, and there are way more of ‘em.

The Bad (And the Ugly)

Detractors of the Caramel Churro Sundae have stated that there’s a lot wrong with this dessert, but a few key issues stand out – and the churro bites are a big problem. “I tried it and its a huge disappointment. I expected actual churros not freeze dried churro bites,” said a comment on Instagram. Another, over on Reddit again, went into more detail on the churros. “The ‘churro’ bits aren’t really even actual churro. Pretty sure it’s just dough with cinnamon/sugar, and quite frankly they tasted nothing like an actual churro,” they said. If the main ingredient you’re using to sell your sundae isn’t working, you’ve already got a problem on your hands.

The caramel sauce is also, if you’re excuse the pun, a sticky point for customer, with the Instagram comments who discussed the freeze-dried churro bits also saying that “the caramel is too much, especially at the bottom.” The vanilla soft serve, meanwhile, seems not to be too much of a problem – but how wrong can you go with vanilla ice cream?

Will It Last?

Who knows? Costco has a knack for removing items from its food court menu with no warning whatsoever, and purely judging by how this sundae has been received, it might want to quietly remove it from existence sooner rather than later. Having said that, it could well double down, tweak its recipe, and give us a new and improved version. We’ll be waiting to see which direction it takes – but until it brings back its churros for good, we’re not sure that anyone’s going to be truly happy.
