I take my Oreos very seriously. I can sniff out a Hydrox cookie trying to pass as an Oreo from a mile away. That said, I’m also incredibly loyal to the soil for Costco. So the idea that Costco might be trying to pass off Oreos that aren’t made with the original recipe that I fell in love with is a little tough to stomach.

Are Costco Oreos different from the Oreos at other stores?

It’s not just our tastebuds, there actually is a difference between the Oreos at Costco and the Oreos at other grocery stores. Oreos are typically made with high fructose corn syrup and artificial flavorings. Costco Oreos, on the other hand, are made with “invert sugar” and natural flavorings. Invert sugar is also liquid like HFCS, but it is made up of 50% fructose and 50% glucose while HFCS is usually at a ratio of 55% fructose and 40% glucose (and 5% other sugars).

As we’ve learned from our countless taste tests of sugar free snacks, different sweeteners can make a world of difference in how things taste. This, combined with a shift from artificial to natural flavorings, are the factors that lead to a noticeable difference between the Oreos you can find at Costco and elsewhere.

Now we know there’s no limit to Costco’s quality guarantee…

The good folks at Costco pride themselves on the quality of products that they supply. They have a rock-solid return policy that’s founded on this principle. They know they can guarantee you’ll love the product you’ll get. From the produce they source to their own branded products, they aspire to put out the best. Apparently, their dedication to quality can even impact how a classic product is made!
