Sure, there have been a lot of exciting new Mountain Dew releases this year (such as the collaboration with Trolli hitting shelves soon), but what about the Mountain Dews of yesteryear? I’m talking about the releases that didn’t stick. I’ve decided to once again crack open my Discontinued Dew Vault in order to taste one of these discontinued Dews and judge whether or not it deserves to come back. This time, we’re going back to a flavor that has a lot of history in the Mountain Dew Universe (the DEWniverse, if you will): Typhoon.

What is Mountain Dew Typhoon?

Mountain Dew Typhoon’s origin story takes us back to 2009 when a bunch of passionate Mountain Dew fans put their heads together to create Mountain Dew Typhoon, a strawberry and pineapple tropical punch flavor of Dew to compete in a competition called DEWmocracy (this would be the second one after Voltage beat Supernova in the first one). Unfortunately for Typhoon fans, White Out prevailed and Typhoon was discontinued shortly thereafter.

Typhoon then saw a limited return in 2011 as part of the “Back by Popular DEWmand” promotion alongside Pitch Black and Supernova. But there was a catch—it was only available in 2L bottles at Walmart Supercenters. After this, Typhoon was not seen again until 2022 when it received an online-only release on the Dew Store in 6-packs of 16oz cans.

Another release was reportedly planned. According to the Dew Wiki, a vote between Pitch Black and Typhoon was in the works for 2023 and would have featured a zero sugar version of Typhoon in addition to the return of full sugar. This promotion unfortunately never saw the light of day. But the question is should Typhoon come back? Let’s crack one open and find out.

Discontinued Dew Review!

Mountain Dew Typhoon (2022) Review

Pros: Mountain Dew Typhoon has a very classic tropical punch flavor. It’s a great pineapple and strawberry blend—and I am a self-proclaimed strawberry boy, so anything with strawberry is a win in my book. It’s hard for me to believe this flavor doesn’t have real pineapple juice in it. (It doesn’t, I triple checked.) Also, the label art features a baby dinosaur surfing. Can you get any better than that?

Cons: Typhoon’s 2010 and 2011 formulas were a little bit more strawberry forward with hints of pineapple. Typhoon’s 2022 formula is the exact opposite: pineapple forward with hints of strawberry. While that’s not necessarily a dig on Typhoon itself, I’m not a fan of the pineapple taking over. And while it is no fault of Mountain Dew Typhoon, there’s another flavor of Mountain Dew that does almost exactly the same thing.

Verdict: NAH, THAT’S WACK!

Before you pick up your pitchforks and torches, hear me out for a moment. You’re probably wondering why I scored Typhoon so high and then said it shouldn’t come back. While I can appreciate how tasty the flavor is, pineapple-strawberry-flavored Mountain Dew Infinite Swirl already exists. So, I can’t help but feel like another old flavor should come back instead. (Cough, cough Supernova.)
