Dr Pepper is going on chicken now.

Slim Chickens and Dr Pepper have teamed up on a new limited-time menu item called Dr Pepper Blasted, which is exactly what it sounds like: Slim Chickens’ hand-breaded chicken with Dr Pepper seasoning all over it.

Except it’s not a sauce. It’s not a marinade. The seasoning is a sweet-and-savory dry blend made with Dr Pepper’s signature 23 flavors and it’s dusted onto the chicken by hand after it comes out of the fryer.

So the breading gets the full Dr Pepper treatment while the chicken remains, thankfully, a chicken tender.

What Is Dr Pepper Blasted?

The new seasoning is available on Slim Chickens’ tenders, tender bites, and wings, which means there are now several different ways to find out what happens when fried chicken tastes like Dr Pepper.

The seasoning sticks to the hand-breaded coating, so you get some of that sweet-and-savory flavor in every bite.

Which means someone sat down, looked at a chicken tender, looked at a bottle of Dr Pepper, and decided these two things needed to meet.

I respect the confidence.

Why Dr Pepper Chicken?

The collaboration is arriving during football season, which is probably the least surprising part of this entire announcement.

Slim Chickens was founded in a college town and the brand is positioning the new chicken around football watch parties, tailgates, and all the other situations where people need another reason to eat fried chicken.

Dr Pepper has its own long-running relationship with college football, so the partnership makes sense on paper.

In practice, though, you’re still ordering a basket of chicken that has been seasoned with a soda flavor.

There’s something wonderfully unnecessary about that.

You Don’t Have To Pay Extra For It

Here’s the other interesting part: Dr Pepper Blasted is available at no additional charge.

So if you’re already ordering tenders, tender bites, or wings at Slim Chickens, you can add the seasoning without paying more. The chain is essentially giving you the opportunity to turn your normal chicken order into a Dr Pepper experiment for the same price.

I don’t know if that’s reassuring or more concerning.

Either way, it’s a low-risk way to find out whether Dr Pepper belongs on fried chicken.

When Can You Try It?

Dr Pepper Blasted is available nationwide at domestic Slim Chickens locations from September 14th through November 16th.

You can get the seasoning on tenders, tender bites, or wings, with no additional charge.

So yes, we are finally living in a time where you can order fried chicken and ask for it to taste like Dr Pepper.

Soda isn’t content to just be the drink anymore. It wants a spot on the chicken, too.
