Entenmann’s Makes Donut Ice Cream Sandwiches and I Tried Them

I love Entenmann’s chocolate doughnuts (or donuts, depending on your vibe for the day). I love the crackly chocolate coating. I love how its texture is somewhere between fudge and wax. I love the crumbly cake doughnut inside. It’s a perfect grocery store treat that has nothing to do with the doughnuts you buy from a doughnut shop. So, when I saw the news about Entenmann’s ice cream sandwiches—some of which were inspired by their doughnuts—I got excited. I had visions of full-sized doughnuts sliced hamburger style with a scoop of ice cream in the middle. So, I tracked down two types—Chocolate and Salted Caramel—from Walmart (they’re only available at Walmart), and gave them a taste. How well did an Entenmann’s ice cream sandwich live up to my hopes and dreams? Let’s get into it.

Let’s start with the positives: The ice cream tastes great. It is rich and caramely with a touch of salt. Delicious. And now the negatives: This Entenmann’s donut ice cream sandwich is impossible to eat! The problem is that while one cookie is soft, the other one is rock hard. So when you bite down, all the ice cream spurts out of the sides and you’re just left with a mess. Give it another go, Entenmann’s. Soften up that frisbee you call a cookie and I’ll try it again.

But wait! Don’t give up on Entenmann’s ice cream sandwiches just because one didn’t work out. Because this one is perfect. It looks appetizing as heck—not quite as good as the picture on the box but pretty dang close. The chocolate coating on top is just like the coating of an Entenmann’s chocolate doughnut (yum), and the cakey texture of that top cookie is similar to a doughnut as well. Take a bite and you’ll be in chocolate heaven. All chocolate elements are perfectly chocolatey. And the ice cream (also chocolate) really tastes like good quality chocolate ice cream. As my colleague Gwynedd Stuart pointed out, more often than not ice cream sandwich ice cream is nothing like real ice cream to the point that it doesn’t even melt. This stuff is good, though. This Entenmann’s donut ice cream sandwich is a feat of food science. Get it!
