Okay. I know what the title says. (Un)fortunately, we’re not exactly the most sane people around. Let’s have a little sadistic fun. Let’s have a look back at McDonald’s Dollar Menu and reminisce over how much food you really could get for a dollar.

Let’s Talk About Inflation
We get to nostalgia-bait and also remind ourselves just how full our pockets used to be. What a win for us all! At its height, McDonald’s Dollar menu included: Big N’ Tasty sandwich, McChicken sandwich, soft serve sundae, soft drink, McValue fries, McSalad Shaker side salad, 2 baked apple pies, and snack-sized fruit n’ yogurt parfait. There’s a lot to unpack here. Sadly, the first thing that popped out to me is that one baked apple pie from McDonald’s would now cost you two times as much than it would for two pies in the past!
I know what the skeptics are thinking. “Vinz, you’re not taking inflation into account!” Oh, but I am. If you were to stretch a dollar in 2002 out to today’s standard, it would be worth $1.84 today. Conveniently, that one apple pie costs $1.89 at my local McDonald’s, so we really are getting half the goods.
What Do Fans Miss The Most?
The account “Nostalgia” on X.com recently posted about the Dollar Menu. Fans took to the replies to share their most beloved options from that sweet, sweet menu. The most obvious comments were people still mourning the loss of the parfait cup and salad shaker. We really need to bring back serving food in a cup.
The next wave of comments are around the loss of the value of a dollar in general. You really miss the ability to buy a McChicken for a dollar when it’ll now cost you three times as much (if you’re lucky). One commenter also praised the overall design of the marketing that McDonald’s had going on in the early 2000s. It hits so much harder than the sauceless design that McDonald’s is working with these days.
We Just Want It All Back
At the end of it all, it’s evident that people just want what we once had. In some ways, what the Dollar Menu really represented was a more carefree time. A time you could bike down to McDonald’s with your friends, a dollar (and some change for tax) each―and build a feast. Growing old is inevitable but was it really meant to be this tough? I’m not saying a return of an actual Dollar Menu would fix everything, especially given McDonald’s track record, but it certainly would make things a little bit easier.
