Just when you think that everything in the food world’s been done, a brand comes along that feels so obvious – and so obviously effective – that it makes you do a double-take. By “you,” I mean “me”; by “brand,” I mean Fruit Riot. When Fruit Riot appeared a few years ago, it caused a huge splash online, thanks to its simple but clever combination of frozen fruit and candy coatings. People fell head over heels for it, and the brand promptly stepped up to the big leagues by collaborating with SunnyD on a new flavor

Now, Fruit Riot is back with a newbie – and this one’s really amping up the sourness.

Fruit Riot Sour Cherries

This week, Fruit Riot will release its new Sour Cherries flavor, according to @markie_devo. Following hot on the heels of its Sour Grapes and Sour Mango options, this new one comes with two different flavors inside each bag: Berry Lemonade and Cherry Limeade. The new product will hit stores on September 15, and it’ll be available at Target along with other major retailers.

News of Fruit Riot’s new Sour Cherries flavor was greeted with jubilation by customers in @markie_devo’s comment section, who are clearly ready for some of that tart, lip-puckering action. “Omggg this is a gooddd one,” stated one happy person, with another saying, “Wow my prayers have been answered this IS the right timeline.” We give thanks to the sour fruit gods above, we guess. These Sour Cherries flavors are notably a little busier than some of the brand’s other options (generally, its other fruits are coated with one single flavor profile, as opposed to a combination of two), so hopefully they don’t taste too chaotic – but we don’t think that’ll stop them from being popular at all.

Trailblazers?

It should be pointed out that while Fruit Riot’s the most prominent brand to sell coated frozen fruit, it’s not the only one that’s done so. Walmart brought out its own version last year in its Bettergoods line, including a cherry version that’s still available. Hershey’s and Reese’s also dropped coated frozen strawberries and banana slices, respectively, a few years ago. Fruit Riot, though, was arguably the first one to really lean into sour vibes, and it’s nabbed itself a lot of loyal customers in the process. We’re excited to see how these cherries land with customers, and what comes next for this burgeoning brand.
