GHOST Energy is releasing a Blue Raspberry energy drink in January. The brand has a healthy mix of classic and unique flavors; this will definitely fall into the former category. GHOST was nice enough to send over a few cans of this new-old energy flavor; let’s crack one open to start the day.

Isn’t there already a GHOST Blue Raspberry flavor?

Kinda! As we’ve covered, GHOST lost the license to produce their slate of Nabisco-branded products earlier this year—including Sour Patch Kids Blue Raspberry and Redberry. Those candy-inspired flavors were wildly popular; my friend Patrick was genuinely distraught that two of his favorite energy drinks were being discontinued. (I got him a can of GHOST’s Sour Strips Rainbow flavor and watched the light return to his eyes. It was a miracle.)

Ever since this Blue Raspberry flavor was first rumored to join the GHOST lineup, people have been praying it’s the SPK Blue Raspberry flavor in a new can (à la C4’s quiet rebranding of their licensed Skittles and Pink Starburst flavors). Luckily for y’all, I saved a can of SPK Blue Raspberry to do a side-by-side comparison. Read on for the dramatic results.

New GHOST Flavor!

GHOST Blue Raspberry Energy

Pros: This new GHOST drink has a strong blue raspberry flavor, wow. Some energy drinks have a universal appeal even if you aren’t the biggest fan of the listed flavor; this drink is definitely for blue raspberry superfans and no one else. And, as we’ll soon cover, this will definitely appeal to folks who don’t like sour energy drinks! There’s a hint of tartness here, but nothing close to what you get in the Sour Patch Kids version.

Cons: Unfortunately, I definitely prefer the Sour Patch Kids version. The candy sweetness in the new version lacks the balancing dose of sour that keeps the SPK edition from being too much. The acquisition of GHOST by Keurig Dr Pepper will lead to so many positive developments for the brand; it’s a shame we had to lose these great Nabisco collabs in the process.
