Finally, I can have Girl Scouts cookies for breakfast without seeing deep concern in my partner’s eyes. Yes, those mad Pop-Tart scientists figured out how to turn round cookies into rectangular pastries. Where would we be without all their hard work? Let’s find out whether Samoas and Thin Mints translate well to breakfast or if they should have stayed in their dessert lane.

Girl Scouts Coconut Caramel Pop-Tarts

Coconut Caramel

Pros: If you’re unaware, Coconut Caramel is the Girl Scouts organization’s generic name for the two different cookies in their lineup. Depending on the cookie baker in your region, you’ll be familiar with Caramel deLites or Samoas. If you like coconut, caramel, and chocolate, this Pop-Tart is a no-brainer.

Cons: If I ate these without seeing the picture on the box, I would swear this was a caramel mocha flavored Pop-Tart. It’s good, but it’s not as faithful to the source material as the Thin Mint Pop-Tarts. It’d be a departure for Pop-Tarts as we know them, but I’d love to see real coconut added in for texture.

Girl Scouts Thin Mints Pop-Tarts

Thin Mints

Pros: I’ve never had a minty Pop-Tart before. After a little research, I found out they released a Mint Chocolate Chip flavor almost twenty years ago. Why it took them this long to return to this flavor, I’ll never know. Anyway, this Pop-Tart definitely has an authentic Thin Mint flavor—save for one thing.

Cons: This is a minor quibble, but these feel like a breadier Thin Mint. The mass of a Thin Mint is almost entirely the chocolate coating, so putting that flavor into a pastry that’s only ~40% covered in frosting is weird. I keep saying it, you can’t change the ratio of chocolate-to-not-chocolate in iconic products.

Where can I get these new Pop-Tarts for myself?

Don’t worry, you don’t have to know a child to buy these new Pop-Tarts flavors. Boxes of each flavor are available now wherever fine Pop-Tarts are sold. A bulk box containing both flavors is also available exclusively at Sam’s Club.

Are there any other Girl Scouts cookie-flavored treats I should know about?

I’m so glad you asked. While I was writing this piece, I got word that Thin Mints-flavored whipped cream was hitting Sam’s Club. I ran to tell the boss about that one, and once I got the thumbs up, I rushed to my nearest Sam’s that same day. Keep an eye out for that review right here on Sporked later this month. (No spoilers, but…oh my god.)

  • I don’t often eat pop tarts, any more. But they’re just as good untoasted as they are hot from the toaster. Haven’t tried the new flavors, yet. But I do like Samoas.

  • I once tried the only variety of Takis, that’s not spicy (Cool Ranch?) . They literally taste like Doritos

  • I’m over 50 and still eat pop tarts. When ever there is a new flavor I’ll grab it and eat it with my kids and see what we all think (I do this with Mt. Dew and KitKats too). I was ki d of disappointed with the hot cocoa ones (too marshmallowy flavored for my liking). I have wondered why they don’t have a mint chocolate flavor and I am really looking forward to try it. I was hoping the Samoa one was going to be good. Again, I’m surprised they don’t have a chocolate coconut flavor. One thing that disappointed me is they seemed to have discontinued the Halloween ones instead chosing to put edible pictures on them instead.

Thanks for the info on these. 🙂
