Costco is known for its great deals―and its iconic food court―but we’re always looking to save even more money. With grocery prices as high as they are, there’s no better time to find a Costco hack worth talking about. Usually the best way to save at Costco is to go big or go home: buying in bulk for the greatest discount. The best way to save money on Costco beef, however, is an entirely different ballgame and one we can get behind. The trick? DIY.

Buy The Biggest Piece Of Meat You Can Find
Chop it yourself. No, really. That’s the only catch. For instance, you can cut a sirloin into sirloin steaks, beef tenderloin into filet mignon, rib roast into ribeyes, or a strip loin roast into New York Strips. You’ll also get a little extra bonus meat with each cut. And even before you factor in those extra trimmings, you’re saving money per serving just by buying that bigger size. Carving the meat up yourself is like a real-life cheat code.
You can also choose to just buy in bulk and break it down for easier eating. Take the 10lbs tube of ground beef. Sometimes you’ll see it in the meat section at your local Costco, but if it’s not laying out, you can always ask for it directly. It may be a little daunting―considering it’s about as wide as the average freezer―but you can break up the 10lbs into one pound servings to dish out on a weeknight. A Costco-sized serving of 90/10 ground beef is around $5 a pound. Ground beef with the same fat ratio costs $9 a pound at my local grocery store.
The Savings Are Worth The Extra Work
I can understand why someone might be hesitant to get in on a deal like this. Maybe you’re not one to be trusted with a knife to cut the meat up yourself. And if you’re anything like me, you might already have too many things in your freezer. If the thought of adding more meat that’s just going to get frosted over before you can eat it sounds daunting to you, that’s okay!
You don’t have to hit up every deal you see. Especially if it’s one that will lead to food waste. You know what’s best for you. My job is just to get things on your radar! And this hack is worth clearing out my freezer for the savings alone. When that’s all done, I’ll definitely be getting a log of ground beef at my local Costco and making Chef Boyardee’s new skillet meals for dinner.
