If your go-to order at a restaurant is a super-secret menu item that’s mainly transmitted by word of mouth, that can cause a little bit of chaos in the kitchen. I can only imagine the miscommunication that happens at In-N-Out when someone walks up saying they want something and the employee thinks they’re speaking a different language. Technically, they are—the In-N-Out Secret Menu fanatic language.

Can you imagine how wild it must be to work in a restaurant where the “secret menu” is actually kinda viral? You can arrive for your shift and have no way to know what you’re about to cook up that day. And on top of it, there are just some “super secret special orders” that you hate—especially when they come in the middle of a rush. As all employees do, some In-N-Out employees took to Reddit to vent about the special orders they hate the most. Here’s what they had to say.

4×4 extra everything, cut in half

A 4×4 is made with four burger patties and all the fixin’s to go with those patties: lettuce, tomato, spread, American cheese, and possibly some onions thrown in, too. All between one bun. Plus, extra of all the toppings. Again, still in between one bun. Imagine being asked to cut that in half and keep it from turning into an inedible pile of burger innards—yikes!

Multiple whole grilled onion burgers at the same time

One whole grilled onion request? Sure, no problem. A ton coming in at once? That’s a lot of whole onions to keep track of…and a jaded onion cutter who has to replenish the stack of whole onions you just ran through.

Cut in four

You can ask for your burger to be cut into quarters. Should you? Only if you want to fight with the In-N-Out employee who has to cut up your burger like a helicopter parent!

Thin tomatoes

Okay, asking for thin tomatoes wasn’t listed by an In-N-Out employee. I just loved that a customer asked if it would be a pain. I think the obvious answer is yes!!!! Sometimes when you walk into a restaurant you can’t get it “your way,” unless you’re at Burger King and then it’s okay.

Protein-style burgers when the lettuce is bad

This one’s not the fault of the customer, so I can’t blame them. Sometimes the lettuce you get just sucks and that’s a reality we all deal with. Thankfully, I don’t have to deal with trying to wrap that sucky iceberg lettuce around a steaming hot burger that needs to stay together, but someone does and I feel for them.
