Can a breakfast sandwich be elegant? Of course it can – but so often, it’s not. Breakfast sandwiches, particularly frozen ones, don’t tend to reach for a sense of classiness of refinement. Instead, the sandwiches made by the likes of Jimmy Dean are more focused on offering a comforting feel, a simple and effective approach, and flavors that everyone knows – without trying to push the boat out. And honestly, that’s okay. That’s what people want.

With all that said, though, we’ve got a lot of time for Kroger’s new breakfast sandwiches, precisely because they manage to capture an ever-so-slight feel of sophistication, while essentially offering the same things other sandwiches do. We’ll show you what we mean.

Kroger Breakfast Sandwiches: Café Culture In Your Freezer

A couple of days ago, ever-reliable Instagram snack tracker @candyhunting revealed that Kroger’s getting a new duo of frozen breakfast sandwiches, both under its Private Selection store brand. These sandwiches are, according to their boxes, “Café Inspired,” and each has a component that gives them a bit of flair.

The sandwiches are:

  • Black Forest Ham, Egg, & Cheddar Cheese Everything Bagel: Your typical ham, egg, and cheese sandwich here, but the black forest ham, with its smoky notes and dark edges, sets it apart. The everything bagel is also a nice touch: While I’m unsure how much it’ll actually look like the box art, which displays a plump, bronzed, shining bagel, there’s a little bit more flavor baked in.
  • Sausage, Egg, & Swiss Cheese Spiral Croissant: This one’s all about the spiral, guys. Sausage, egg, and Swiss aren’t revolutionary ingredients, and nor is a croissant – but the design? The curvature? The gentle lines hinting towards artisanal craftsmanship (even if that isn’t actually the case, given it’s, y’know, frozen)? A simple tweak to its design, and it’s set apart.

When Can I Get Them? And Where?

Well, to answer the last one…Kroger. As for the first question there, they’re already in stock! These breakfast sandwiches cost around $12.99 for a four-pack, which makes them more than double the cost of some of its other frozen sandwiches – but they promise to be bigger, heartier, and altogether a little better than those sold under the generic Kroger brand, and they also pack 21 grams of protein into each serving. And, of course, there’s the “black forest ham” and “spiral croissant” of it all. And they say that money can’t buy you class…
