Quick, get Barbie and tell her it’s happy hour! A new Malibu just dropped and it’s Malibu Pink. What is Malibu Pink? Is Pink a flavor? What part is pink—the bottle or the booze? Chill out, hypothetical strawman, I’ll get to it.
Malibu Pink is a new flavored rum-based spirit that comes in at 21% ABV—the same ABV as Malibu’s classic coconut rum. Both the bottle and the rum itself are pink. And, according to the brand, it’s a “white rum with tropical liqueur” and flavors of pineapple, coconut, and guava (the only pink fruit in the mix).
Per Saragh Killeen, U.S. Brand Director of Malibu, the brand launched this new expression as the “next evolution in tropical flavor, transporting summer-seekers on a new adventure.” They suggest drinking it as a shot or splashing it into lemonade. Is it any good, though? I poured out tastes for Sporked’s own team of summer-seekers in order to find out. (Yes, we get paid to drink at work. Safely, of course.) Here’s our official review of this new Malibu flavor.
Pros: The color is wild. It’s super bright, super clear pink. It’s like the pink jewelry in the Pretty Pretty Princess game (that really connected with a select few of you). It doesn’t resemble any drink I’ve ever had, and it’s always fun to consume a new color. It smells super tropical, though the flavor is less overtly so at first. My initial sips reminded me of watermelon juice, but as I drank more the guava flavor came out.
Cons: It’s so very sweet and it tastes strong even though it’s only 21% ABV. Personally, I could not sip even a shot of this straight. It also has a bit of a tropical Bubblicious gum thing going on, rather than tasting like real fruit. That might be a positive for some, but as a gum hater I’m not into it. Also, I missed Malibu’s signature coconut flavor. It’s very subtle.
Verdict: There are plenty of occasions for this new Malibu flavor thanks to its color—it’s definitely going to make appearances at bachelorette parties—but I’m not sure folks are going to make it part of their usual drink order. It’s a fun novelty, but I’ll be sticking with classic Malibu for my sweet, tropical flavored rum needs.
Hi! I’m the editor-in-chief of Sporked. I will never turn down a fresh-shucked oyster but I’ll also leap at whatever new product Reese’s releases and I love a Tostitos Hint of Lime, even if there is no actual lime in the ingredients.
Why you should trust me: I have been writing about food and beverages for well over a decade and am an avid at-home cook and snacker. I began my career writing about fine dining and recipes, moved into cocktails and spirits, and now I talk about groceries. If you can eat it or drink it, I’ve probably written about it.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s dried okra. Appleton Farms prosciutto from Aldi. Some sort of Trader Joe’s cheese (I’m into the aged gouda at the moment). Frozen waffles (usually the Eggo Cinnamon Toast Minis). Spindrift water (loving the Cosmopolitan right now).
Favorite ranking: Smoked salmon. Imagine me as Scrooge McDuck but instead of coins I’m diving into a vault of slippery smoked salmon slices. Pure joy. I also found some real steals in that taste test!
Least favorite ranking: Canned oysters. I had such high hopes for this but it quickly became a chore. The kitchen smelled like an uncleaned aquarium.
