If you can’t decide between the Saja Boys or HUNTRIX, McDonald’s has a middle-ground option for you. While purchases of the two fictional bands’ meals are being diligently tallied ahead of the winner being revealed on April 26, there is a KPop Demon Hunters menu item that is utterly fandom-neutral and available all day long. (Some members of the Saja Boys Pride have raised complaints that the “voting” method is unfair, since the Saja Boys Breakfast Meal is available during breakfast hours only. I think they should be more worried about their preferred group being canonically evil and dead, but what do I know?)
McDonald’s sent over a gift card so we could try the Derpy McFlurry for ourselves. Let’s find out whether this tiger-inspired treat has earned its stripes.
- McDonald’s Derpy McFlurry Review
-
Pros: If you were worried about the popping boba feeling too disparate from the humble, domestic McFlurry, I have great news. The flavor, size, and near-frozen texture combine into a very familiar form factor: Blueberries. In a blind taste test, this would come across as a blueberry McFlurry long before the words “popping boba” crossed anyone’s mind.
Both the popping boba and the wild berry sauce make this a fantastic fruity McFlurry; while fruity soft-serve isn’t anything new, fruity soft-serve from McDonald’s certainly is new…
Cons: Why don’t we have fruity McFlurry options? Select international McDonald’s have offered fruity variants before, including the South Korean Strawberry OREO or Australian Banana Caramel Pie variants. Presently, McDonald’s offers both Chips Ahoy and OREO McFlurry treats here in America. Do we really need two chocolate-cookie McFlurry mix-ins year-round? Especially when the only other option is also chocolate? McDonald’s needs to commit one of these slots to a rotating fruity variant ASAP.
As for the Derpy McFlurry in particular, my only negative note is that berry popping boba plus a berry sauce swirl isn’t the most creative option. If we could have swapped the berry sauce for some kind of cheesecake sauce, I think we’d be up to something appropriately magical… if a little less on theme from a cultural perspective.
