It’s been a year of revamps in the fast food world, and not all of those revamps have been received well. Some of the biggest chains around have gone back to the drawing board with both menu items and menus themselves, and while some changes (like Burger King’s Whopper update) have largely been regarded as positive, others (like the alterations Wendy’s made to its Spicy Chicken Sandwich) have not. Never one to be left out, McDonald’s has also been making some tweaks…and the ones it made to its value menu were, well, eyebrow-raising.

So when we found out that McDonald’s was changing its McCrispy Strips, we were a little nervous – even though they categorically needed it. What if it made them worse? Well, the first reviews are in…and here’s what people are making of them.

And The Verdict Is…

We started hearing word that McDonald’s would be altering its McCrispy Strips a little while back, following some pretty harsh customer feedback on them (basically, the breading sucked), and word on the street was that they would morph into something much closer to Chicken Selects. Over the last few days, customers have given the new recipe a whirl – and apparently, McDonald’s has improved things considerably. Thank god for that.

As is so often the way, the preliminary reviews of the new strips came via Reddit, with two separate threads discussing them – and in both, people have confirmed that they’re a lot better than they used to be. “Credit where credit is due,” said one customer. “I have missed the OG chicken selects for years. And while I wish that is what we got, I respect the decision to move closer and give us something with more crunch and craggy bits.” The increased crunch factor has been recognized across the board. Fair play, McDonald’s.

A Pinch Of Seasoning

A couple of other people pointed out that the new strips have a different seasoning blend – and this is something that’s causing slight dissent amongst customers. While some say that the more intense seasoning is a positive, others say that it’s a little overwhelming and that they’d prefer something a bit milder.

Well, look. You can’t win them all. From our perspective, though, more crunch and more flavor are rarely going to be a bad thing. There’s still time to bring back the original Chicken Selects, though, McDonald’s: Can you hear that sound? It’s the roar of people crying out for them.
