America’s (and Sporked’s) favorite frozen pierogi brand, Mrs. T, just released new tiny “snack pierogies” out into the wild to try to make a name for themselves in the frozen snack world. They come in four flavors: Cheddar Sour Cream & Onion, Five Cheese, Cheddar Ranch Seasoned with Bacon, and Jalapeño Popper, and beyond their unique stature, they’re a little different than you would expect. Why?

You aren’t meant to boil and then pan-fry these on the stove. The bags have no instructions for that—instead, they’re meant to be air-fried or baked. You’re supposed to drizzle some olive oil over them, shake ‘em a bit, and toss it in the oven for a little over ten minutes.

And look, because these new flavors don’t taste that different from each other, I’ll give some quick thoughts on each, plus an overall verdict at the end. Also, big disclaimer: I wasn’t able to try the Jalapeño Popper flavor. We couldn’t find it, sorry! But here’s what we thought of the others… and whether or not this baking and/or air-frying method actually works for frozen pierogies.

Sour Cream and Onion

Cheddar, Sour Cream & Onion

Pros: Who knew I would love the taste of sour cream and onion goo? Me. I knew. I’m built like that. These basically taste like chewy, bite-sized dumplings filled with flavored instant mashed potatoes. They’re extremely poppable—and pretty molten on the inside, so just be careful.

Cons: The textures, man. They’re weird. The pasta wrapper is chewy in a plasticky way, which is generally what happens when you try to bake or air-fry pierogies. (I would know. I’ve made that mistake before.) The mashed potatoes inside are pretty gloopy. It’s not a winning texture combo, but I still ate every single one I cooked, so do with that what you will.

Cheddar Ranch Seasoned with Bacon

Cheddar, Ranch Seasoned with Bacon

Pros: This is the flavor for the real freaks. It’s heavy on the bacon; you’re basically eating bacon goo. And hey, what’s wrong with that? No one can tell me what I can and can’t enjoy.

Cons: It’s probably the least palatable and crowd-pleasing out of all the flavors. Tasting this was more of an interesting experience than something I’m dying to repeat. Also, for better or worse, you don’t get much ranch. It’s more like a loaded baked potato.

Five Cheese

Five Cheese

Pros: Five Cheese, in concept and execution, makes the most sense. Because gooey cheese is a texture we’re all familiar with, it melds with the potatoes nicely and doesn’t taste strange. The cheese is pleasantly tangy and not off-putting—sometimes the flavor of “five cheese” has a stank or acidity to it that I don’t love, but that’s not the case here.

Cons: I don’t have any specific cons for this one, other than what you’re going to read below. So keep scrollin’, kid.

My overall verdict:

These are a cute after-school snack and kinda fun for a casual party platter, but true pierogi lovers might find them disdainful. I rated them fairly because I did enjoy eating them, simple as that. But objectively, their texture, both inside and out, doesn’t lend itself to success. Don’t skip the olive oil part—that helps immensely, And try not to let these thaw outside the freezer for too long. They’ll refreeze stuck together, and lemme tell ya, they’re impossible to pull apart.
