I’m a fervent and lifelong Haagen-Dazs fan. It was THE low-ingredient, high-quality ice cream before anyone even cared about stuff like that, and even though it’s owned by Dreyer’s, its pints still outshine other grocery store brands. They just do. When’s the last time you jammed a spoon into a pint of regular ol’ Haagen-Dazs Vanilla? To quote that one lady on TikTok, “Nothing like it.”
Everyone’s favorite hard-to-spell ice cream brand just launched some new flavors, and I’m here to tell you about one of them: Haagen-Dazs Dark Cherry Truffle. What we have here is cherry vanilla ice cream with a cherry ribbon and soft cocoa truffles. Sounds good right? Well, we have some notes. Okay, one note. But it’s a biggie. Hear me out…

Pros: The cherry vanilla ice cream is rich and creamy. It has a nice, juicy black cherry flavor rather than a fake-y red cherry flavor. The ribbons of cherry goo add even more pops of bright fruitiness. And the truffles? They’re good. They’re melt-in-your mouth creamy even though they’re suspended in a frozen dessert, and they have a really assertive dark chocolate flavor. This would be the perfect pint to bring home for Valentine’s Day, except …
Cons: Okay, maybe I’m making this up, but I could swear Haagen-Dazs Cherry Vanilla ice cream (the existing pint, not the base here) contains little chunks of actual cherry. I mean, looking at the product shots online, it certainly looks like there are juicy cherry bits in the mix. (I’d reference our own ranking, but it actually wasn’t one of the TWENTY-THREE Haagen-Dazs flavors we taste tested). Am I conflating Haagen-Dazs Cherry Vanilla and Ben & Jerry’s Cherry Garcia? Look, I don’t know—all I know is that I really wish this new Haagen-Dazs flavor contained actual cherries. But hey, their absence didn’t stop me from devouring the bulk of this pint.

About the Author
Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks.
Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown.
What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction.
Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home.
Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
