Best Frozen Egg Rolls: 6 Best Frozen Egg Rolls for Your Chinese Takeout Cravings

Chinese-American takeout—that warm, comforting, perfectly sweet and savory style of food—is a damn gift. To understand Chinese-American food’s excellence, look no further than egg rolls.

Deep-fried egg rolls are crispy, crunchy, stuffed appetizers that immediately quell our rumbling stomachs. But can store-bought frozen egg rolls achieve restaurant-quality greatness? We invited Mythical’s post production coordinator, Adam Morales (aka Ammo) to find out. All of these egg rolls were cooked according to their instructions in a hot oven—not an air fryer or a microwave. We also ate them plain, without duck sauce. And here’s what we looked for: Crunch, texture, fat, and flavorful filling. We want egg rolls so good they could ride solo without hot mustard and duck sauce. Egg rolls that feel deep-fried and delectable. Here are the top six frozen egg rolls we tasted.

best frozen egg rolls: minh pork egg rolls

Best of The Best

Minh Pork Egg Rolls

Minh egg rolls are flaky, filled with pork, and pleasantly greasy. When food is coated with fat, it negates the need to drown things in sauce. I love a sandwich that’s simply Italian meat, cheese, and a little drizzle of olive oil. That’s what these Minh egg rolls feel like to me. The natural juices of the pork shine bright and the egg roll shell tastes like it’s been brushed with some sort of oil. Minh feels deep fried, and that’s hard to do! That’s why it takes our number one spot.

best frozen chicken egg rolls: chung's chicken egg rolls

Best Chicken

Chung’s Chicken Egg Rolls

The salt factor in these frozen egg rolls is very strong. Chung’s egg rolls also have a notable celery flavor. Celery and chicken are a classic and comforting combo that endures. There’s something homey about  fresh celery and meaty chicken, and you get that with Chung’s. As far as texture, the egg roll shell is crunchy and flaky, and the interior is soft and chewy. This would go really well with sweet and sour sauce. Tame that salt with a little bit of sweet!

Tai Pei Vegetable Egg Rolls

“For a vegetable egg roll, these are pretty flavorful,” said Ammo. (Side note: I’m so glad there’s somebody in the office named Ammo. That’s rad. What a cool nickname. I don’t want to be the guy that nicknames himself, but if people could start calling me Bazooka or Crunch Master that would be extremely tight for me.) Ammo is right, by the way. These vegetable egg rolls are really flavorful. You know how some egg rolls taste like cabbage and that’s it? Not Tai Pei. They’re loaded with shitake mushrooms, vermicelli noodles, bamboo shoots, green onions, and carrots. These pack a great balance of umami and sweetness, and they’re salted perfectly. Vegetable egg rolls should have a variety of vegetables. Don’t settle for less.

Signature Select Pork Egg Rolls

“The insides are really nice,” said editor-in-chief Justine Sterling moments before she was canceled. For being deep fried, these egg rolls taste pretty fresh. The hint of celery is nice and the subtle herb and vegetable flavors go a long way, too. Some egg rolls are too small, but not Signature Select. These are big ol’ egg rolls. Managing editor Gwynedd Stuart put one in her mouth and made us take a picture of her like she was smoking a cigar. When we’re not arguing about food, we like to have fun here at Sporked. And the point remains: These are a generous size. Extra points for that.

best frozen egg rolls: pagoda chicken egg rolls

Best with Sweet and Sour

Pagoda Chicken Egg Rolls

These egg rolls taste just like chicken pot pie and we aren’t complaining. There are thick chunks of celery and carrot inside Pagoda’s chicken egg rolls. “Okay, Pagoda, I see you,” said Ammo, giving props. The egg roll wrapper is nice and crunchy. “It’s a good, soft crunch,” added Justine. “The flavor is really good. And there’s a lot of savoriness.” Sometimes you want a puffy, chewy egg roll that you can drown in sauce. That’s Pagoda. Plus, it tastes like stuffing. Stuffing!!

Happi Foodi Cuban Style Egg Rolls

“It feels like 7-Eleven food,” said Gwynedd, pleasantly surprised. This egg roll does have that junk-food, sitting-on-a-roller-all-day-like-a-taquito quality to it. There’s something comforting about a food that’s so obviously bad for you. This egg roll is filled with pork, bacon, Swiss, and diced pickles. The result is a Cubano sandwich inside of an egg roll. The mild tang of the Swiss cheese comes through more than any flavor. Pairing this with some hot mustard is recommended. Egg roll fusion is trendy. One day we’re all going to end up inside of an egg roll.

  • While this is super cool to see the top 6 in these categories I dont know how to really take this at face value because I dont know what the other not as great ones were. The way this looks is you tried 6 of them and then ranked those 6 in order here.

It would surely be better if you advised the others you tried in those categories or just in general to show why these won out over the others.

Thanks for the articles, and yes I came because it was mentioned in the fancy fast eggroll ep

    • I agree with all of this, including my reason for coming here to check out the egg roll ranking. 😋

    • I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that I don’t think this is an America’s Test Kitchen kind of in depth ranking. They also don’t really compare them to each other and seem to just want to sell the products. I don’t mean that like it is a bad thing, just that you may have to temper the expectations a bit

  • I’ve never seen the Minh brand near me. Small town Midwest problems. We often don’t get the variety you see in big cities. I looove Chung’s though! The pork are my favorite.

  • i like Feel Good Foods Vegetable Egg Rolls. they’re closer to a spring roll, than an egg roll. they crisp up really well in the air fryer, but i used to heat them 75% done in the microwave, then finish them stovetop in a nonstick pan. i was glad to find a meatless, low fat choice. they happen to be gluten free, but that’s not a issue for me.
