Oreo’s Advent Calendar Is Here (But Customers May Not Be Able To Afford It)

The advent calendars are arriving thick and fast, people – and yes, I know, I know it’s not quite Christmas yet. But in my opinion, it’s permissible to get ahead of the game on these specific items. Some of them are designed to start being opened on December 1, after all, which is six weeks away. As such, food brands have been wasting no time, and in the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen advent calendar drops from some more likely suspects (Nestlé Toll House being one of them) and some slightly more unlikely sources (like Murray’s, Red Bull, and Texas Pete).

Oreo falls in the former camp, and it’s probably no surprise to anyone that it’s got an advent calendar of its own. The only problem? Customers are struggling with the price. Let’s break it down.

Oreo’s Advent Calendar: Something For Everyone

This year, Oreo’s released its Holiday Advent Calendar, and it’s got way more going for it than just a couple of standard Oreos or Oreo-flavored chocolates. This calendar has 12 windows, and behind each one is a handcrafted, fudge-dipped, decorated cookie. Depending on the day, you could be enjoying a snickerdoodle, eggnog, cherry cordial, caramel & pretzel, or a cinnamon hot cocoa cookie. Yes, there are only 12 of them, but Oreo’s clearly intending each one to be a special experience.

Oreo’s Holiday Advent Calendar is available on its website, but only while stocks last. And it’s on that website that you’ll see the issue some customers are having. This advent calendar is priced at $44.99 – which works out to approximately $3.75 per cookie. That’s not accounting for the actual calendar and the festive experience of it all, of course; we’re just talking pure food here.

A Hard Price To Swallow

When @markie_devo posted about this advent calendar over on Instagram, people’s initial excitement sadly started to wane. “Omg I was happy until I seen the $45 dollar price tag lmao,” stated a comment, one of many who quibbled with the cost of this festive treat. Others pointed out that this price doesn’t include shipping, which some have said comes in at $20 (on the Oreo website, it states that shipping will be calculated at checkout, so your own cost may be more or less).

It is worth noting, of course, that these Oreos are clearly intended to be way more special than your standard sandwich cookie. But even then, $45 for a dozen is a lot. If you’re an Oreo aficionado, or an advent calendar enthusiast, or both, this might appeal — but we wouldn’t blame you if you decided to just grab yourself a sleeve of Oreos and have one a day in the run-up to Christmas.
