I have seen brands leak new product info a year in advance. I have seen them not post anywhere but give out samples of a new product at one of those giant snack food innovation conventions. I have seen them do limited-time releases that turn into full-time flavors, and, most of all, I have seen Oreo release new flavor after new flavor until there are more unique Oreo flavors than there are thoughts in my admittedly quite empty head.
In the last three years alone, I have written over 20 Oreo-related articles for Sporked, including the first article I ever wrote, which was, spoiler alert, about a new Oreo flavor. But friends? Romans? Oreo-lovers? They have changed their game over at Oreo, and they are now in the business of announcing items they have not yet released, but that are still “in development,” the most recent item being Oreo Stuffed Cupcakes.
What kind of cupcake? We talkin’ grocery store bakery? Hostess? My janky, homemade, eggless, “we have cupcakes at home” extravaganza?
At least we can glean from this Instagram post by food news account Snackolator that by the looks of this thing, the Oreo Cupcakes are in the same camp as the Hostess or Little Debbie cupcakes, but with a signature Oreo twist. The cupcakes will, according to the packaging, be chocolate cake with a creme filling, frosting (looks to be vanilla or Oreo creme flavored—no chocolate frosting layer like Deb and Hostess), and a real Oreo cookie on top. The box features the tagline, “The same Oreo taste you love, now in a cupcake.” But Oreo? I am skeptical. I am skeptical for a few reasons.
The first reason is that I know the existing Oreo Cakesters (Oreo’s take on a whoopie pie) have a bit of a strange, highly preserved flavor to them. The second reason I am skeptical is that there seems to be a high chance (at least in my mind) that these taste like plain ol’ chocolate cupcakes with nothing distinctly Oreo about them besides the Oreo on top. This brings me to my third reason which is more of a question: Won’t the cookie on top get soggy? If not, then @Oreo you have defeated science, and I tip my hat to you. Plus, candidly, I wouldn’t even be mad about it. My beige flag is that I love a stale, chewy Oreo, and if these ones on the cupcakes turn out that way, I will be A-okay with that development.
But that leaves one question. The black-and-white elephant in the room. When will these hit shelves? The short answer is we don’t know. The longer answer is we still don’t know, ask us again (unfortunately, we still don’t know)! Why Oreo told us anything at all when these cupcakes are apparently nowhere near shelves is a bit of a new move from Milk’s Favorite Cookie, but hey, maybe things are different when you are on milk’s good side. Personally, I can’t relate; milk doesn’t like me all that much, and the feeling is mutual. That said, we are very excited for these, and if Oreo somehow finds a way to make these cupcakes actually taste uncannily similar to Oreo cookies, I may just have to buy some of these bad boys and give them a whirl.
