A lot of people like shopping at Costco. Whether it’s because of the giant carts, the $1.50 hot dog combo, or the thrill of walking in for paper towels and somehow leaving with a kayak. But even the biggest Costco fans have their limits.

A recent discussion on Reddit struck a nerve with warehouse shoppers everywhere, and judging by the flood of responses, many members are tired of one particular Costco ritual: being repeatedly asked to upgrade to an Executive Membership after they’ve already said no.

Costco Shoppers Say The Hard Sell Is Getting Old

A Reddit thread, titled “No, I don’t want the Executive Membership…”, quickly turned into a venting session, with hundreds of commenters sharing stories about sales pitches at checkout, conversations that wouldn’t end, and the awkward feeling of being marketed to after already paying for the privilege of shopping there.

For many Redditors, the complaint isn’t necessarily about the Executive Membership itself. Plenty of members swear by it. The issue, according to commenters, is the persistence.

One shopper described being pressured into upgrading despite repeatedly explaining that their household simply doesn’t spend enough money at Costco to justify the higher fee. Another recalled an employee continuing the pitch after hearing “no,” while others complained about workers approaching them during checkout or asking what type of membership card they carry.

To Be Fair, Plenty Of Members Love Executive

Of course, the other side of the debate showed up quickly. Many Reddit users defended the Executive Membership, saying it has more than paid for itself over the years. Some reported receiving reward checks worth more than the annual membership cost, while others said upgrading stopped employees from asking about it altogether.

Costco’s offers members a 2% annual reward on qualifying purchases, among other benefits. For shoppers who spend heavily throughout the year, the numbers can work out in their favor. But commenters repeatedly pointed out that the math simply doesn’t make sense for everyone.

Smaller households, people with limited storage space, and members who shop only occasionally may not spend enough annually to earn back the extra fee.

The Costco Experience Is Supposed To Feel Different

Part of Costco’s appeal has always been that it feels slightly removed from traditional retail. That reputation is precisely why some shoppers appear surprised by aggressive upgrade conversations. One commenter even suggested that if another retailer employed the same tactics, shoppers would likely criticize it much more harshly.

Still, many members acknowledged that employees are likely following company directives and trying to explain a program that genuinely benefits a large number of shoppers. Some Redditors even admitted that persistent pitches eventually convinced them to upgrade and they ended up happy with the results.
