Pie well and truly comes into its own during fall, and if you thought that food brands would be missing a trick there, you would be sorely mistaken. We’ve started to see the pie parade out in full force, with new fruit pies from Smucker’s dropping this month and Sam’s Club’s cherry lattice and pumpkin pies making their grand return, in the name of autumnal joy and bliss.

Sam’s Club hasn’t forgotten about everyone out there who prefers savory options when it comes to their pastries, though (of which I count myself as one). It’s just dropped a new appetizer that turns your favorite comfort food into a handheld version.

Member’s Mark Homestyle Chicken Pastry Bakes

Sam’s Club’s new Member’s Mark Homestyle Chicken Pastry Bakes have just landed in its stores, and if the sight of them doesn’t fill you with a feeling of warmth, then I don’t know what will. If you didn’t know what was inside, you could mistake these bakes for plain buns – but enclosed within each buttery round of pastry is a chicken and vegetable filling, all bound together in a white sauce. They are, for all intents and purposes, handheld chicken pot pies (there’s an argument to be made that some smaller chicken pot pies are kind of handheld, or at least can be, but that’s beside the point).

Member’s Mark Homestyle Chicken Pastry Bakes can be found in the freezer section, and you get eight per box. Each bake has 12 grams of protein. It might be worth gently noting that they have 21 grams of saturated fat per bake, roughly 105% of your recommended daily value, a large amount of which comes from the butter in the pastry. That butter really shines through, though.

Oh, Really?

Yes, really. @samsclubfoodreview provided an early review of Sam’s Club’s new Homestyle Chicken Pastry Bakes, and the verdict is in: These things are good. The pastry is especially rich and flavorful, and when baked, it develops a lovely nuttiness. The filling, meanwhile, feels suitably hearty, and the chicken inside doesn’t have any of that unpleasant rubberiness that can so often afflict frozen meals. The only downside, apparently, is that the sauce could be slightly creamier — but hey, the store’s got a lot of things right here.

Member’s Mark Homestyle Chicken Pastry Bakes are being rolled out to Sam’s Club stores now, and they should be widely available from this week onward. Make a beeline for your freezer aisle for some near-immediate comfort.
