Sugar Factory is a kid-friendly restaurant chain that mostly serves normal food, like pastas, fajitas, and a nice club sandwich—but the real draw are apps, snacks, and desserts that look super fun to eat. Their shakes are topped with mountains of whipped cream and crumbled candy bars. Their King Kong Sundae is made with 20 scoops of ice cream, cookie chunks, and a ton of candy. And if you’re in the mood to splurge there’s a $150 burger that’s covered in edible gold. Lighter, cheaper, but no less eye-popping are the Rainbow Sliders, mini burgers served on buns in every color of the rainbow. And they’re coming to the frozen aisle.

Admittedly, I’ve never been to Sugar Factory, but I tried the frozen version of the Rainbow Sliders and I have some thoughts.

New Product!

Sugar Factory Rainbow Sliders

Pros: They’re certainly vibrant! You get a box of five little burgers in five colors: blue, red, yellow, green, and purple. My first thought was that these would be perfect for picky eaters who only want to consume foods that tickle their brains a little bit, but I could also see some kids being suspicious about a green hamburger. Colors aside, these are very simple—just burger patty and bun (although they do have a beef and cheese variety). It’s up to you to add all the fixins. The patties are good. They’re a little dry out of the microwave, but well seasoned. I ate my burger plain but I’m confident it would be better topped with some mayo, lettuce, tomato, and raw onion for moisture. Oh and the little rubber ducky that comes in the box is cute.

Cons: Far be it from me to suggest you undercook your meat, but I followed the cooking instructions on the box and wound up with a colorful hockey puck on my plate. Cooking one of the mini burgers for 40 seconds and then flipping and cooking for another 35 seconds was way too long, in our microwave, anyway. The patty actually survived and still tasted fine, but the bun turned to stone. You’ll likely have to do a little experimenting with your own machine.

7/10

Sporks

These little hamburgers—which are being promoted by Mike Tyson for some reason—launched in Jewel Osco stores in the Midwest, but should be rolling out nationwide as we speak.

Howdy! I’m Gwynedd, Sporked’s managing editor. I live in Los Angeles and have access to the best tacos the U.S. has to offer—but I’m a sucker for a crunchy Old El Paso taco night every now and then. I’ve been at Sporked since 2022 and I’m still searching frozen mozzarella sticks that can hold a candle to restaurant sticks. Why you should trust me: I’ve been a journalist for 20 years (yikes), a consumer of food for 40-plus years, and I’m truly hard pressed to think of foods I don’t like (or that I can’t tolerate at the very least). Oh and one time I cooked my way through Guy Fieri’s cookbook and wrote about the journey through Flavortown. What I buy every week: Trader Joe’s Original Savory Thins. Fat free plain yogurt (usually Fage or Nancy’s). Honeycrisp apples. Sweet cream coffee creamer for my at-home Americanos. A frozen cauliflower crust pizza and some jarred mushrooms to top it with. Old El Paso Stand ‘N Stuff taco shells and Gardein Ground Be’f, even though I think “be’f” is a nightmarish contraction. Favorite ranking: Stouffer’s frozen dinners. I don’t own a microwave (I get my cancers the old fashioned way!), so I love taste testing things that I don’t really buy to eat at home. Least favorite ranking: Soy sauce. Don’t get me wrong, I love soy sauce—but consuming that much sodium in one sitting is probably illegal in some countries. Our frozen enchilada taste test was a close second; the smell of microwaved corn tortillas still haunts me.
