Hey ’90s Kids, Sunny D Made *Hard* Purple Stuff

Today’s news comes with some required viewing. If you aren’t already familiar, you have to watch this ’90s Sunny Delight commercial. The “Purple Stuff” commercial must have had an impact on sales, considering multiple versions featuring kids of different ages were produced in quick succession. The commercial definitely had an unintended social impact as well; the idea of purple stuff was skewered by comedians and TV shows for decades.

Well, Sunny D is finally getting in on the joke with a brand new drink exclusively for the folks old enough to remember the iconic Purple Stuff ads. Sunny D Vodka Seltzer is about to release a new Purple variant inspired by the lasting cultural impact of their decades-old advertising. Read on for all the details on this new self-referential hard beverage.

What is Sunny D Vodka Seltzer?

First off, we should cover the base beverage at the core of this new release. Sunny D Vodka Seltzer is a sugar-free hard seltzer inspired by, of course, Sunny D. This nostalgic hard beverage is 4.5% ABV–a little less than a basic White Claw‘s 5% ABV, but functionally the same. We weren’t too impressed by the original version, but we’ve also fallen behind on reviewing the many flavor variants to release since then. Maybe we should get our hands on this new variant and see whether the concept has improved since our initial review.

What flavor is “Purple Stuff”?

Per the Total Wine & More product description, Sunny D‘s new Purple Vodka Seltzer features a “blend of Berry and Grape flavors”. I’m no flavor scientist, but I do believe most purple products across the 90s contained one or both of those flavors.

Speaking of, I should clarify something about this new release. This drink is not actually called Purple Stuff. The label says “Purple Stuf”… with the word “Stuf” scribbled out. My best guess as to why? Sunny D doesn’t own the trademark for “Purple Stuff” in relation to alcoholic fruit drinks! That said, we all know what this is supposed to be.

Where can I get Sunny D Purple Vodka Seltzer?

Since this drink hasn’t been officially announced yet, we don’t actually know for sure. The product image and information in this article were sourced from Total Wine & More’s website, so we can reasonably expect they’ll stock the 4-packs. Beyond that, I assume we’ll see this new variant wherever Sunny D Vodka Seltzer is currently sold. If I hear otherwise, I’ll circle back with an update.
