The $1.50 hot dog combo at the Costco food court is a meal that’s for the people. It’s accessible to all―rich, poor, or just too lazy to cook and live within driving distance of a Costco. It doesn’t discriminate. The dangerous door this opens is that it might be a little too accessible. It’s attainable by the real freaks of the world. The people who don’t let societal pressures hold them back. I’m not saying I blame Costco for this latest hack, but they certainly brought it upon themselves.

The “Chop Dog” At A Food Court Near You

Food influencer @morganchomps has taken to TikTok to share her latest creation with the Costco hot dog. She calls it the “Chop Dog.” I try to keep an open mind, but I just want to warn you―this is a little unhinged. We’re used to seeing simple hacks like the hot dog slid into a chicken bake. That’s pretty harmless. This one on the other hand? A whole different beast.

Why It’s Complicated

For one, you need half a kitchen’s worth of utensils for this hack. That’s already a pretty high sale for me. To start, you’ll need a cutting board, a fork, and a knife. The work starts by chopping the dog into chunks and shaking the pieces in the brown bag―the one your hot dog came in―with mustard, ketchup, and relish. Then you plop all that back into the bun.

Morgan calls it “the perfect bite of a hot dog every time.” I think the problem with this one is a little glaring. I would argue that the shakeup does nothing if you already spread the ingredients to cover your whole dog right off the bat. Some commenters seem to agree with me. “All that work to eat something that tastes exactly the same as if it was a normal hotdog,” wrote one commenter on Instagram.

“Lowkey Uncomfortable And Intrigued At The Same Time”

Another viewer hit the nail on the head for me with the previous quote. I get the need for a gimmick. I love a bit. Getting clicks on social media these days is hard! You need something snazzy, flashy, and exciting to get someone to stop and watch your video. Yes, this “hack” is essentially the same as just eating a hot dog the normal way. It’s much more flamboyant though―and really that’s what we’re looking for on social media.
