Tillamook knows ice cream. And guess what? It wants you to know it, too. Not necessarily in a “nice to meet you” sense, but more in a “here’s what actually goes into the dessert” sense. As some of us are aware, ice cream has a shadowy sibling by the name of “frozen dairy dessert” – and if you’ve ever bought the latter but expected the former, you may well have ended up disappointed, without quite knowing why. And the ice cream brand has decided that enough is enough.

So, it’s addressing the knowledge gap between the two through a new educational campaign. And it’s giving out free ice cream in the process.

The Real Scoop

Tillamook has just announced the launch of The Real Scoop, a summer-long campaign which, it says, seeks to inform customers about what’s actually in their frozen treats.  “We believe consumers deserve the facts about what’s really in their freezer,” says Tillamook County Creamery Association’s Senior R&D Associate Scientist, Hunter Clayton, in the company’s press release. “Chances are you’ve picked up a frozen dairy dessert thinking it was real ice cream. Consider this your newsflash: The Real Scoop is our way of giving consumers the full picture before they reach into that freezer.”

Tillamook’s reasoning for doing this is pretty sound: A lot of people don’t know the difference between the two, and nearly half of all Americans have purchased frozen dairy dessert thinking it was ice cream. So, to the education. The brand has launched a website that gives you the breakdown on how these two foods are distinct from one another. And, if you go to that website, you can grab a coupon for a free Tillamook ice cream product.

And What Is The Difference Between The Two?

Well, in case you don’t want to head to Tillamook’s website, we’ll tell you. For a product to be called ice cream, it has to have a minimum of 10% dairy milkfat in its blend, and less than 100% overrun. Overrun refers to the amount of air in an ice cream or frozen dairy dessert: The more it has, the lighter it’ll be, and the more it’ll lose volume when it melts.

By contrast, frozen dairy dessert can (and does) have less dairy milkfat, and may replace these with vegetable oils or stabilizers to create texture, as well as flavorings to improve its taste. Frozen dairy dessert is cheaper than ice cream, but it’s also generally less satisfying if what you’re looking for is the creaminess of the latter.
