Is New Trader Joe’s Burrata Filling a Creamy Dream? We Tried It

Have you ever had burrata, that fun sphere of cheese that you get to cut into and watch all the luscious curds and cream flow out? Well, say goodbye to the fun! Okay, okay, I’m just kidding—Trader Joe’s has simplified things by taking the mozzarella ball out of the equation and giving us a tub of straight-up stracciatella, aka all that creamy stuff inside the burrata. Believe me, I’m well aware there are more egregious ways to ruin a good time than releasing a tub of delicious, wet cheese.

In fact, Trader Joe’s Burrata Filling is a pretty fantastic convenience food. If you’re not planning to consume an entire ball of burrata in one sitting, a tub of the creamy goo that lies within is a great thing to have in the fridge. Crack open the lid when a craving strikes and, voila, you have creamy cheese with stringy curds of mozz for spreading on toast or eating with a spoon. But the question remains: Does this new Trader Joe’s cheese taste good? We tasted it to find out.

Trader Joe’s Burrata Filling (Stracciatella)

Pros: Trader Joe’s Burrata Filling has a delightful balance of cream and curd. The long, stringy shreds of mozzarella are suspended in a luscious, creamy base—it all blends so well you can’t tell where one texture ends and the other begins. It’s soft but not runny. You could easily slap a dollop of this on a crispy piece of bread and not worry about any seepage or spillage. It has a familiar fresh-mozzarella flavor. It’s lightly sweet, milky, and perfectly fatty. It has a nostalgically familiar taste that reminds me of good string cheese in the best way possible. This stuff is going to contribute a pop of freshness to anything you add it to. A few globs on grilled summer veggies or atop a frozen pizza? Hell yes.

Cons: I know this is burrata filling, so there’s no ball of mozzarella to go around it. That’s the whole point of this new Trader Joe’s cheese—but I want the orb! I want to cut into a shell of cheese and watch the innards spill out like I’m some back-alley surgeon. Honestly, there’s not a lot of bad stuff I can say about the flavor of Trader Joe’s Burrata Filling, but it did lose half a fun point.
