Trader Joe’s Caramelized Onion Dip, widely revered and easily spotted at just about any house party, needs no introduction. I won’t insult your intelligence by implying you’ve never had this beautiful, rich, savory-sweet little onion dip before. She’s an icon, a legend, and one of the store’s main staples that non-TJ’s shoppers will come in just to buy.

But I have to tell you, with love: You aren’t using this $3 dip to its full potential. This stuff is so much more than a snack or appetizer.
Okay, I’m listening. What else can I put this on?
You have to unlock the power of Trader Joe’s Caramelized Onion Dip as an ingredient. Caramelized onions can be a real bitch to make, and TJ’s just has this sitting around for cheap.
Personally, I’ve put this stuff on:
- Toast with a fried egg on top (I’m basic, okay)
- Plain quesadillas I just throw together when I have no time
- Pasta. You guys. Put this on your pasta with parm and cream. It’s the easiest, laziest onion sauce you can imagine. (I’m light with it, though, since it can be pretty sweet.)
- My spoon. With nothing else. Just to eat it, on its own. Primally, with great passion and little shame.
Redditors on r/traderjoes (shout out to @Silver288 and @Professional_Ad223) also suggest:
- Using it as a burger sauce
- Putting a dollop over a baked potato
- Stirring it into mac and cheese
- Coating your chicken with it before baking or pan-frying
- Spreading on a bagel with some smoked salmon
Dude, I’m sorry, but I just eat the whole tub with chips in one sitting. There’s no “leftover” onion dip for me to put to good use.
And hey, you know what, that’s an incredible point. I’ve been there. The only reason I ever tried using it with anything else is because I ran out of chips in the first place. Now I just buy two tubs of these at TJ’s without wasting an ounce of it.
But, for the record, we ranked the best chips for dipping, specifically, too. If that’s something you’re interested in.
