We’re still all talking about pickles. But we can’t help it! These pickle-flavored products just keep on coming! If I had to bet on when the dill pickle trend was ending, I’d probably lose a fair bit of money, because every week I think it’s over, and every week we get something else (pickle mayo? Pickle ketchup? Sure, and sure). There seems to be an insatiable appetite for vinegary, herby flavor in everything product development teams can think of, and whether that appetite is driven by the consumer or created by the brands making these things, we can’t say.

Regardless, dill pickle items are ten a penny these days – but we shouldn’t forget which supermarket was there at the start. That supermarket was Trader Joe’s, whose dill pickle mustard and seasoning were around long before everyone else started doing it. And now, TJ’s has brought back a pickle product that first appeared earlier this year, and it’s got things very right.

Trader Joe’s Dill-icious Cream Cheese

This week, Trader Joe’s customers have started to see its Dill-icious Cream Cheese appearing back on its shelves. This cheese spread initially dropped in February, and back then it got some rave reviews, with Parade giving it a 10/10. Customers were fans, too – but, alas, it was a limited-edition item and was soon wrenched from shelves.

You know what, though? We love an encore, and so does TJ’s. It’s just dropped its Dill-icious Cream Cheese once more, and as with its first run, people are pleased. “I’ve been eating this on a morning bagel for 3 days in a row,” said one person on Reddit, where customers have been discussing its recent reappearance. Multiple people have also said it’s excellent with salmon, and it works well as a dip on its own, too.

And What’s So Good About It?

Well, aside from the fact that Trader Joe’s generally nails its dill pickle-flavored products, here we have a contrast of sourness and creaminess that clearly works very well. If it’s not handled properly, pickle flavor can quickly overwhelm whatever it’s added to and become dominant and off-putting. Trader Joe’s, though, has tempered it here, and it’s also clearly being very generous with the amount of dill in there. Basically, there’s balance and impact at the same time. At $2.79 per 8-ounce tub, this is also a spread that won’t cost the earth — but you can all but guarantee it’ll be here for a good time, not a long time, so it might be worth snapping up now.
