Granola in a bowl, or peanut butter on toast? You don’t have to make that decision anymore. Granola butter has been around for a minute, so it’s a bit of a stretch to call it “the new big thing” — but it does feel like it’s been growing in prominence of late. Brands like Oat Haus have carved out a space for themselves in this canny little niche, turning spread into cereal, cereal into spread, and breakfast into an adventure.

And now, Trader Joe’s wants in on the action. It’s just released its own granola butter, and customers are saying that it feels juuust a little similar to the brand we mentioned above.

Trader Joe’s Granola Butter

Trader Joe’s Granola Butter has just hit shelves, and according to customers over on Reddit, it’s pretty decent. A customer who posted a thread about the spread said that it “Tastes like a sweet graham cracker in spreadable form,” and that it was “A good option for those that are allergic to nuts or need nut-free options for school.” At the same time, they did note that its consistency was a little oily and grainy, and that they wanted something on the thicker side – but we guess you can’t win ‘em all.

Others, meanwhile, pointed out that this granola butter felt like a dead cert to Oat Haus’ own product – and others still were convinced that this is actually made by the brand itself, and just packaged in Trader Joe’s livery. There’s no concrete proof of this, but a Redditor in the same thread noted that they’d seen that one of Oat Haus’ cofounders had liked a few of Trader Joe’s posts about the butter. It’s a fair assumption to make that they wouldn’t be doing that if they were, y’know, not happy about TJ’s making a move like this. We’ll await official confirmation on that front, though.

Granola Butter For Everyone

Trader Joe’s Granola Butter is currently available in its stores for $5.49 per jar, but if you’re keen on making it yourself, it’s easier than you might think. All you need is your favorite granola and some melted coconut oil: Blitz them together, and you’re good to go. Other recipes out there make it from scratch, and if you want to keep an eye on exactly what’s going in it, you definitely can – but it takes a few extra steps. Or you could just let Trader Joe’s (or Oat Haus) do the work for you.
