HUGE NEWS, PEOPLE: There’s a new kind of breakfast potato at Trader Joe’s. If you think I’m being facetious, you’re wrong. I’m very hyped about this. I get hyped about breakfast potatoes in general. All forms of potato, in fact. Potato skins. Hash browns. Creamy mashed potatoes. Waffle fries. Shoestring fries. Crinkle fries. Sorry, what were we talking about? Oh, yeah…

These new Trader Joe’s frozen potatoes are called Spicy Spuds, and they’re basically diced potatoes with a whole lotta seasoning. They smell divine right out the bag—so I had high hopes for their taste out of the air fryer. (Normally I would skillet these bad boys, but our office kitchenette was otherwise occupied.) Here’s my honest review.

Trader Joe’s Spicy Spuds

Pros: My hopes were not dashed. I love these little spuds. They’re crispy on the outside and have a melt-in-your mouth creaminess on the inside. The seasoning is bold, a little smoky, and slightly spicy from the cayenne. (They kind of remind me of Checker’s curly fries.) But they don’t use too much seasoning, despite how red and coated they look. You know how sometimes home fries at a diner come over-seasoned with herbs? That was my fear here, but nope! They’re delicious. The parm adds umami and ties the whole thing together, too.

Cons: Zero cons. ZERO. These are great.

Verdict: If this review feels rushed, it’s because I’m typing it with one hand while shoveling these potatoes into my mouth with the other. Trader Joe’s, can you make Batata Harra next? I trust you.

Howdy! I’m a Sporked writer based in L.A., and you can find me overstaying my welcome at just about any coffee shop with free wifi, no matter the speed. Sadly, I can never move back to my home state, Florida, because even if the seafood is totally unmatched, there aren’t enough Mediterranean or Korean restaurants to keep me sane.
