Sick of spilling scalding-hot soup on your shirt when you’re craving tom yum? Well, does Trader Joe’s have a product for you. Their Tom Yum Seasoned Snack Mix combines cashews, fried fava beans, snappy dried green peas, and clusters of sticky rice, and, of course, all the nice, savory spices in tom yum soup. If it’s been a minute since you’ve had a bowl (or if you’ve never had a bowl, no shade), it typically contains lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, chile peppers, and fish sauce. That’s a lot of flavor to promise in a snack mix! Did TJ’s pull it off? We slurped up some Trader Joe’s Tom Yum Seasoned Snack Mix to find out.

Pros: Dried soup snack mix! What a freaking concept. And it really works here. This is SUPER lemongrassy and wonderfully savory. It really, really (really) tastes like tom yum soup. Plus, the mix of nuts, peas, rice, etc. is super crunchy and fun to eat. You could really turn some heads is you served this at a tailgate or Survivor watch party. The whole Sporked team agrees, this stuff is excellent.
Cons: There are dried chili peppers in the mix, and frankly, it’s a bit much for my Midwestern taste buds. If you’re mindlessly snacking, you could accidentally get a very spicy bite of snack mix. I unfortunately did catch a stray pepper and had to rush to get some ice cream onto my tongue asap. In their defense, there really aren’t that many peppers in the. mix. But if you’re sensitive to heat, keep an eye on what you’re shoving in your mouth.
