Every once in a while, a company releases something that makes me wonder, “Who asked for this?” and, “Is that person okay?” Speaking of which, just last week Hostess launched a new flavor of Twinkie that will be available until the end of July (while supplies last). The Twinkie flavor in question? Limited-Edition Tropical Blast.
Now, I have some thoughts. If this was a delicious white coconut creme, I would be totally cool with it. I could even get behind a pineapple Twinkie or a piña colada Twinkie. Heck, even mango, passionfruit, or banana wouldn’t be bad. But this new tropical Twinkie comes with golden sponge cake and a blue-colored, tropical fruit-flavored creme filling, and that worries me a little. Will this be like that all-purpose tropical flavor used in gum and candies? Or was Hostess more intentional with their fruit flavor decisions?
At first, I was hesitant to find out. But then I watched this YouTube video of a guy trying them and he said that the blue creme tastes like Froot Loops. Now hold on a minute—this I can 100% support. Froot Loop flavor does not register as “tropical” to me, but do I think it would work as a creamy blue center to a yellow cake cylinder? Umm, heck yeah I do. That iconic cereal and milk flavor, plus creme, plus cake? I’m fully on board with this creative decision. Now I might need to run out to the store to see for myself if that is truly what these fluffy, blue-creme-filled, cake tunnels actually taste like. For science!
