Turn A Yellow Box Cake Mix Into A Thanksgiving Fave With This TikTok Hack

I really shouldn’t be allowed to scroll on TikTok when I’m hungry. Thankfully it did work out for me this time. I recently came across this TikTok hack from 2025 (don’t ask me how I got there) and I really need to share my findings with you all. This might be the trick to a killer Thanksgiving dessert that we’re all going to have to use this year.

Pecan Pie Dump Cake

The video from @AshleyElleLiving is pretty easy to follow. You honestly don’t even need to listen to it to get the full picture of what’s going on, the full recipe is in the description. If you need a little synopsis, what’s really going on is a few wet ingredients are being mixed together and a box of yellow cake mix is added to the top. The result is a killer pecan pie dump cake that I’m definitely using for Thanksgiving this year.

Easiness Will Always Win Out

The one factor that this recipe has going for it―that really sets a lot of Thanksgiving recipes apart―is that it’s easy to make. The bar really is that low. The last thing you want to do during your Thanksgiving prep is to follow a fifty step recipe. We don’t have time for that! Make it simple or don’t make it at all. It doesn’t get much easier than this.

All you have to do is mix up your wet ingredients, dump your cake mix on top, and sprinkle a few pecans into the dish. There’s no browning of butter, no worry of adding too much of your dry ingredients at once. You would actively have to try to mess this recipe up and even then, I’m not fully convinced it could be done.

To Ice Cream Or Not to Ice Cream

As Ashley Elle mentioned in her video, she chose to add ice cream on top of her pecan pie dump cake but her husband abstained. I really don’t think there’s a wrong way to do it. I can see how ice cream could be a little too indulgent, especially after a big Thanksgiving meal.

I, though, am a glutton for punishment so I will absolutely be throwing a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top of my serving of cake. Either way you choose to partake, I think we can all agree that this pecan pie dump cake is making its way onto our Thanksgiving tables this year.
