Our Honest Review of Viking Berry Juice Monster

Oh, Juice Monster, what a line of drinks you are. This oft-forgotten branch of the great Monster Energy tree still bears fruit every once in a while. Last year, we got the exotic Rio Punch (I have a can in my backlog of “drinks to try” which I’m sure I’ll get to eventually). This year, we’ve got the epic-sounding Viking Berry. The design work here is snazzy, with full-color illustrations of vikings, boats, animals, runes, and fallen foes spread across the whole can. Is the drink itself worth all this expensive artwork? There’s only one way to find out. But first, let’s talk about what we’re in for.

Is there actually a Viking Berry in nature? This is such a good question that I already answered it in my initial coverage of this new Monster flavor when it was revealed last October. Yes, there is a berry-producing shrub known as viking aronia. That berry is known by many names, including aronia berries and chokeberries. What do these viking berries taste like? Per some very niche websites, chokeberries are sweet, tart, lightly bitter, and sour. Does this new Juice Monster flavor live up to that flavor profile? Let’s find out.

Viking Berry Juice Monster

New Monster Flavor!

Viking Berry Juice Monster

Pros: This new Monster flavor is sweet, tart, and ever so slightly sour. Monster nailed the idea of aronia berry that I had in my head from reading all those wiki pages. Per the description on the can, this drink was “inspired by wild Nordic berries and Scandinavian fruit.” None of my research firmly plants aronia berries in either of those categories (they’re primarily grown in North America), but I won’t be nitpicky. This is a great, authentic berry-flavored energy drink in a world of candy-esque berry drinks.

Cons: I’m not too concerned with the sugar content in the drinks I review. (In this line of work, it’s hard to maintain a perfect diet.) That said, good lord; this 16oz can contains 93% of your daily added sugar. It doesn’t taste teeth-rottingly sweet, but the nutritional facts don’t lie. That might be the real reason why Juice Monster doesn’t get too much attention; they’re all super sugary.

Where can I find this new Monster flavor for myself?

Juice Monster Viking Berry will be sold wherever Monster Energy products are sold: grocers, gas stations, and those weird grocery store gas stations with the drink fridges next to the attendant cage. (Doubt me all you like on that last one, but I found this drink in that exact situation before my official PR sample was even shipped!)

This drink isn’t going anywhere, either. Unlike other companies, Monster Energy does exactly zero limited-edition flavors per year. When they release a new flavor, they expect it to last. We’ll see Viking Berry on shelves until the day it sells so little that the only logical choice is to discontinue it. That means you’ll have plenty of time to find it for yourself.
