Are you fan of Mexican sodas? Think of these as the “Walmart equivalent.”

One of the best features of Walmart’s Great Value label has to be it’s line of sodas, many of which offer cheaper alternatives to well-known soda brands. Some of them also have cooler names, as anyone who’s ever drank a “Dr. Thunder” will definitely agree with.
And now Walmart’s added four all-new sodas to the Great Value line, with the selling point that they feature cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Now, most U.S. soda brands use corn syrup because its cheaper than other sugars, due to U.S. corn subsidies. So why is Walmart avoiding corn syrup in these new sodas? Well, it all comes down to which sodas Walmart are copying this time.
You see, most Mexican sodas (including the Mexican version of Coke) use cane sugar, and fans have been seeking them out whenever possible. And these new Walmart flavors appear to be based on several popular Mexican sodas. Even the packaging looks like it’s based on papel picado, a type of Mexican paper decoration used to decorate weddings and holidays.
Here’s a guide to the new flavors and which Mexican drinks they’re based on.
Cola
This one’s definitely based on Mexican Coke, probably the best known and loved Mexican soda in the states. Fans of it say that it is much smoother and less “syrupy” than the corn syrup version. Ironically, most Coke sold in Mexico actually uses corn syrup, and they just make the cane sugar version to import to the U.S. as “Mexican Coke.”
Grapefruit
Chances are this is based on Jarritos grapefruit soda, which is known for it’s tart and not-too-sweet taste. (It’s the second best Jarritos flavor, in our opinion.) However, there’s also a version of Squirt that’s popular in Mexico, so it could have shades of that, too.
Lemon-Lime
While this might be partially inspired by Jarritos Lime, which has a very intense lime flavor, it’s more likely that this is a version of Sprite or 7-Up, both of which are very popular in Mexico.
Apple
This one’s gotta be a version of Sidral Mundet, an apple-flavored drink that was originally inspired by the style of Mexican fruit drink known as aqua frescas. Although, we should mention that there are three different versions of Sidral Mundet based on apples: golden apple, green apple, and red apple. So, I’m really curious to find out what version of the drink we might be getting here.
