Nacho Cheese Doritos have a cult following. People absolutely love them. I get it! They are a delicious Doritos flavor. But could a Doritos dupe ever live up to the hype of the real thing? Walmart is certainly trying! Their Great Value Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips are cheaper and come in a larger bag than Doritos. The image on the package looks exactly like Nacho Cheese Doritos. We tried both in a side-by-side taste test to find out if Great Value could one up Doritos.
The Brand Name: Nacho Cheese Doritos (~$5)
Nacho Cheese Doritos have a certain je ne sais quoi. They’re crunchy and cheesy and a little corny. They’re so savory and delicious. The cheese powder cakes up on your fingers as you dunk your hand into the bag over and over again. All that being said, I don’t think Nacho Cheese Doritos are so out there that you could never recreate them. They’re just cheesy tortilla chips, after all.
The Store Brand: Great Value Nacho Cheese Tortilla Chips (~$2)
In general, we love Great Value products. Not only are they often dupes for brand name products, but they can be even better than the real thing. That is not the case with these nacho cheese tortilla chips, though. The chip is too corn-forward. The Doritos chip doesn’t just taste like a tortilla chip. Both these chips and Nacho Cheese Doritos might be tortilla chips coated in powdered cheese, but Doritos taste more than the sum of their parts. Great Value’s Nacho Cheese chips simply taste too tortilla chip-y. They’re certainly not bad, they just don’t come close to the deliciousness that is nacho cheese Doritos.
Winner: Nacho Cheese Doritos
I’m sorry, Great Value, but you let us down this time. Rework your formula and shoot us an email. We were rooting for you!
