These past few weeks in our Aldi hauls, we’ve highlighted some of the fun things the brand is doing with brioche buns, like hot honey brioche buns and giant brioche buns. And what a perfect time to focus on buns. It’s summer and that means grilling and what cookout isn’t complete without some brats, dogs, or burgers? (None is the correct answer.)

So, we picked some up and are going to give our opinion on how these buns hold up to the normal grocery store.

What Is Brioche?

Some people may not know what brioche is and think it’s just another simple white bread―so why buy these when there are other buns out there? Well, that’s where you’re wrong. Brioche is a special type of dough. It is enriched with the addition of things like butter, oil, eggs, milk, and sugar. It means the dough takes longer to prove but has a much richer flavor than your standard bun.

This is why it’s becoming popular in many restaurants. An enriched dough like brioche offers a more flavorful experience to the consumer. And it could be a big hit at your next cookout. Note that the inclusion of sugar adds a hint of sweetness to these breads. We all love a good Hawaiian roll―this is the same principle. But better.

What Did We Think?

Now for the important part. What did we think when trying them? I’m personally a huge fan of brioche. It offers a richness that non-enriched bread just cannot match. But that doesn’t mean brioche is always the answer. I’ve certainly had brioche buns that were too sweet or didn’t have a good fat ratio and you could tell in the taste.

Pros: This bun holds up to exactly what the package says. It’s a nice rich brioche bun. It’s top split, which I personally prefer in a bun. It makes for a better eating experience. So if you haven’t tried a top split, this is a great trial bun. It’s also got a good amount of sweetness. There’s just a small hint which works perfectly with the fatty hot dog (or whatever you put in your bun).

Cons: This is a bit of a hefty bun. So if you’re having just a hot dog in it, then it may have a bit too much bread to meat. A brat would do really well if you’re not a fan of a lot of bread as they would hold up to each other. If you don’t mind a little uneven bread-to-meat ratio, this bun is a solid choice for the BBQ.

Verdict: This is a solid choice for your next cookout or hot dog night. It’s a rich bun without being too sweet, adding a nice roundness to your dog of choice. It doesn’t hurt to try if you’re curious or if you want to add a little more depth to your food. Your guests will certainly thank you.
