Quick aside: cookies and cream, however you spell it, isn’t my first choice for ice cream flavors. (I don’t hate it, because I’m not insane.) But I do have a good friend who eats it almost exclusively, no matter how Cinnamon Toast Crunch-y or delightfully nostalgic our ice cream options are getting in general.

Point is, through my friend, I’ve come to appreciate that when cookies and cream ice cream is good, it’s one of the more sublime flavors you can get―a classic for a reason, vanilla/cream contrasting with chocolate, smooth, cool ice cream interrupted by flirtatious chocolaty chunks of Oreo-style cookie. So when I heard that Aldi’s store-brand Sundae Shoppe had brought in Mochi Ice Cream’s Cookies & Cream flavor, I definitely wanted to try them. Would it all become a sweet soft ooey gooey glutinous mess? Or would my cookies and cream opinion be forever changed?
Our Thoughts
Pros: Portions. It seems like a very lame or joyless pro, but these are kind of perfectly sized mochi ice cream servings (kind of the size of those chocolate covered Oreos) to be an easy, sweet treat. Really, they come six to a tray, so you don’t have to overcommit. Additionally, it’s hand held. The mochi itself, which is nice and supple, is thick enough to hold the ice cream “puck” inside, but not so thick that any bite tastes doughy.
As for the flavor, of course it’s a little bit on the sweet side―that tends to happen when you have sweet (mochi) + sweet (ice cream). My first impression wasn’t “Ohhhh, too sweet,” but “Wow this kind of tastes like eating a delicious cloud.”
Cons: I’d be really silly to complain that ice cream melts. Please know, this isn’t that. And it’s a minor con―but as they get warmer, even just a few minutes out of the freezer, the ice cream will start to melt and then slip out of the mochi. So if you eat slowly, maybe just try one at a time. (Yes, there’s a chance you’ll go back for a second, or third, especially since they’re only 80 calories each and just kind of adorable-looking.)
Final Verdict
If you can handle the (fleeting, but definitely present) sugar rush, these are a great choice, especially for an after school snack, a light dessert, or a mid-afternoon “I deserve this” stress-relief treat. They’re also reasonably affordable―$4.95 for a box of 6.
