We Tried Krispy Kreme’s New Coffee Donut (And We’ll Stick To The Classic)

This year for National Coffee Day, Krispy Kreme released their Original Glazed Coffee Flavored Doughnut in stores for a brief period of time. Essentially, it’s your standard Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut, but instead of the traditional clear sugar glaze it is a coffee flavored rendition of the glaze. And, it’s only in stores through the end of the day tomorrow. When September 29 (National Coffee Day) is over, so is this doughnut’s run on the menu.

As profound coffee lovers here at Sporked, we knew that we would have to try these out for ourselves when they came out. We had a lot of questions going in as to whether or not they would really be able to pull this flavor off, and whether or not it was even a necessary addition to their menu considering how good the original glazed are on their own. We simply had to get to the bottom of this coffee-flavored mystery. Here’s our official Sporked review.

Our Official Thoughts

Coffee and doughnuts are an eternally classic pairing. However cliché it may be, the pair have been engrained in the cultural Zeitgeist of food pairings. Thus, we expected this to be a naturally fantastic combination. We know the two go together, we’ve been taught it our entire lives. But, Krispy Kreme kind of dropped the ball in actually combining the two entities. In the end, the pairing of coffee and doughnuts only actually works when you can taste both of them. Who woulda thunk it…

Essentially, our main issue with this doughnut was that you could barely taste a difference between these and Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed. The doughnut itself is exactly the same, so on that front these doughnuts were a major success. But, the glaze had only the faintest whisper of coffee flavor.

And I don’t just mean that it could’ve been stronger based on preference, I mean I ate half of the doughnut before even getting the lingering aftertaste of coffee on my palate. If you’re going to call something the total package of coffee and doughnuts all in one, then you better make sure your customers can taste both. Unfortunately for us, that just didn’t happen.

In addition to the lack of overall coffee flavor though, there was also a very strange texture to the glaze that you just don’t get from the Original Glazed. It was cloudier and left you with a much greasier mouth feel. In the end we realized that while it wasn’t inherently bad, we still would have just preferred an Original Glazed and a nice cup of jo’ to wash it down.
