OREO and I have a pretty good working relationship: OREO releases a cookie, I write about how much I like it, repeat. Well, we might break that streak today. I’m about to tackle the first-ever sweet-and-savory OREO cookies; stay tuned for a follow-up review of both the Banana Pudding and Deep Fried OREO cookies as soon as I recover from this one. Let’s find out whether chicken & waffles belong in sandwich cookie form.

Are these chicken-flavored cookies actually vegetarian?

Yes. I specifically reached out to OREO to confirm that the “natural flavors” listed on the nutritional facts don’t include any undisclosed authentic meat-based ingredients. (If you weren’t aware, that’s both legal and super common! McDonald’s French fries are the biggest example.) The cookie giant verified that these cookies are 100% vegetarian, even if their packaging doesn’t specifically call it out. In their defense, this is the first time it’s ever been relevant. I’m sure there’ll be a note on the packaging for any future… meat-flavored OREO cookies? Maybe we can just skip past that concept indefinitely, actually.

New OREO Cookie!

As best I can determine without doing surgery on a cookie, this sandwich cookie is broken into three parts. Waffle-flavored wafers sandwich a dual layer of maple syrup and fried chicken-flavored cremes. But how does it all taste? Thanks to OREO sending over an early pack, I’m about to find out.

Pros: There’s so much to talk about here. To delay the inevitable, let’s talk about the aroma that hits you when you open this pack of cookies. These cookies smell nearly exclusively like waffles and maple syrup, with only a hint of anything savory underneath all that breakfasty sweetness. You could absolutely trick someone into thinking this is just a maple waffle-flavored sandwich cookie. I’m not suggesting you do that, but if you do, send me the video.

As for the flavor, well… It’s accurate. This cookie tastes like proper fried chicken and baked waffles with syrup. OREO has created the cookie equivalent of Willy Wonka’s Thanksgiving dinner gum. I’ve never had a cookie remind me of a specific meal before, but this truly brought me back to a fantastic plate of chicken, waffles, and grilled watermelon I got in Knoxville at Not Watson’s back in 2023…

Cons: That isn’t to suggest this cookie is as good as the best chicken & waffles I’ve ever had, but it is aiming for that ballpark. This is going to be a very divisive cookie, folks. I enjoy the complicated, disparate savory and sweet layers in this cookie quite a bit; my girlfriend said it’s the worst thing I’ve ever had her sample (which is no small statement) and that it reaffirmed her vegetarian stance. Since sharing my early samples with select family and friends, I have discovered that enjoying this cookie makes me the minority.
