This week’s Crumbl menu is themed all around classic diner-style desserts. The menu spans everything from ice cream sundaes to Mississippi mud pie to peanut butter bars. But the one that interested us the most was the carrot cake cookie. Not because it is necessarily the most over the top, but because it is not. Over the past few weeks, Crumbl has been aiming high and missing. So, let’s see if they’re doing the basic flavors better than some of their more experimental items.

This cookie is made with a carrot cake cookie dough and is simply topped with cream cheese frosting and pecan crumble garnish. It seems pretty simple and carrot cake is a pretty hard flavor to mess up. So, our expectations are high. Let’s see how this cookie holds up.

Our Official Thoughts

Pros: I’m quite happy with the fact that this week we decided to taste test one of the simpler cookies on Crumbl’s lineup. It reminded me that Crumbl can, in fact, make and execute a unique cookie well. The flavor of this cookie was good and very natural. In fact, there are pieces of actual carrot in the the cookie dough itself. The spices were warm and delicious, but not aggressively heavy. Instead, it was a nice blend of warmth that let the natural sweetness and earthiness of the carrot come through. And, since the pecans were well toasted, you got the strong and distinct nuttiness from the garnish and every bite that they were a part of. Honestly, with a garnish like this from Crumbl I’m usually expecting it to be a bit of a throwaway flavor. But they actually put enough all on the cookie where you can pretty consistently get a piece or two of pecan in most bites.

I think one of the biggest positive is about this cookie is that it is served up warm. This probably isn’t a universal experience, but when you smell a carrot cake baking, it’s an impossible task to then let it cool completely to be able to turn it into a cake to avoid it breaking or melting the frosting. This cookie allows you to experience what it’s actually like to indulge in the cake while it’s still warm, and oh, what a delight it is.

The cream cheese frosting on the warm cookie gets super soft and luscious, almost like the creamy sauciness of a cream cheese frosting put onto a hot cinnamon roll. To be honest, I think it’s really hard to make a bad cream cheese frosting. Cream cheese, sugar and butter are always gonna be delicious.

Cons: I think my only real qualm with this cookie is the overarching issue that plaques most products from Crumbl: they’re just too sweet. The dough and the cream cheese frosting both could really have done with a big pinch of salt to give it much needed balance. Beyond that, though, this is by far one of the most satisfying cookies that we’ve seen from Crumbl in quite some time. Speaking of time, this cookie teases the fall season in the perfect way in that it doesn’t fully commit to pumpkin spice, but still gives you a taste of warmth and coziness.
