We Tried Shake Shack’s Entire Truffle Menu (And Ranked It)

Some of you may have already heard the news that Shake shack has brought back their fan-favorite truffle menu to Shacks nationwide. Shake Shack considers this one of their most successful limited-time menus in company history, so the return of it was honestly not that big of a surprise to us. As the seasons begin to turn and we seek more comforting, earthy flavors from our food, we were looking forward to the possible return.

But now, we don’t have to wait any longer to get our hands on all the Black Truffle Menu items. So we went out and bought one of every item on the new truffle menu from Shake Shack so that we could let you know our honest thoughts and opinions. Here’s our official Sporked to review.

Black Truffle ‘Shroom

While we do appreciate that there is a vegetarian alternative on the menu that isn’t just some passé excuse, this deep-fried mushroom fuck is a bit of an odd choice for their vegetarian burger option. There’s clearly a lot of effort that goes into each one since it’s a mushroom that is stuffed with a blend of munster and cheddar cheese, battered, and deep-fried before using it as a replacement for a patty on one of the Shake Shack burgers, but it doesn’t land.

There’s such an overwhelming amount of gooey, very mild cheese in the middle that it almost makes it unappetizing. Even the truffle sauce couldn’t save this one. We were looking forward to the flavor combination of the mushroom, delightful white cheeses, and truffle. But it just never tasted good or interesting enough to keep us coming back for another bite.

Black Truffle Shack Stack

Although this burger still had the gigantic fried mushroom component, this one actually tasted much better because, well, it had an actual burger patty on it. When you bite into a burger only to receive an aggressive amount full of neutral tasting cheese, it is a very distant flavor experience to an actual beef patty. And we’re not saying we should try to re-create that beefy flavor, but an actual griddled mushroom would be more reminiscent of the flavor of a burger. Luckily for this sandwich, it was a happy median between the two burgers in this collection. However, the truffle still definitely needed to be stronger.

Black Truffle Burger

Listen folks, we here at Sporked love the flavor of the black truffle sauce that Shake Shack makes. Not everyone loves truffle flavor, but if you do this is a really nice way to make the flavor accessible for a convenience food like Shake Shack. The fast casual setting isn’t something we typically see with truffle flavors and Shake Shack is doing well. That’s why we were a little bit disappointed with this burger.

The sauce is so good, and yet there wasn’t enough on it for you to really get a nice kick of that truffle flavor. And, considering how mild the fontina flavor is as well, the burger does come off a touch bland. We would even order this burger again if we just had an extra portion of the sauce to add to it. It just needs an extra push to make it great.

Black Truffle Parmesan Fries

Considering how generally under-salted Shake Shack’s crinkle-cut fries are, the Parmesan was a welcome addition to these fries. Other than the sauce, which is served on the side, there is no black truffle flavo, actually on the fries themselves. But, the sauce is so strong in truffle flavor and delicious in its own right that when you have a fry altogether with the sauce and Parmesan, it’s a pretty delicious bite. Just make sure to eat them quick, because there’s no fast food fry that gets quite as sad as Shake Shack’s crinkle-cut fries after they’ve gotten cold.

Mac & Cheese Bites

Shake Shack’s mac and cheese has brought up a wide range of opinions. Some people love it, some people hate it, and if you want to read more of our official thoughts here at Sporked you can read our review here. But these mac and cheese bites introduce something else entirely. Not only is the mac inside this fried parcel is not the same mac and cheese as the side available at Shake Shack, but in our eyes it is more delicious. 

This isn’t some super fancy mac and cheese that they are deep frying. It is nostalgic both in the overcooked quality of the noodles and in the flavor of the cheese sauce. They are lightly battered and fried to crispy perfection, after which they were wonderfully salted. We would happily order these again, and we highly recommend taking this opportunity while the Black Truffle Menu is here to dip these mac and cheese bites into a side of their black truffle sauce.
