Taco Bell really has it all going on right now. Between the release of their throwbacks menu with 2016 favorites and their quiet release of the Chicken Enchilada Nacho Fries, when you look at the Taco Bell menu it seems like everything is new and limited edition. And to highlight the subtle release of Taco Bell’s newest loaded fries in the shadow of the trendy throwback menu, we knew we’d have to give them an extra special try. But hey, maybe that’s just ’cause we love French fries. Regardless, we tried them out for ourselves and have some thoughts. Naturally, we have to tell the dear readers of Sporked our findings. So here they are.

An Impressive Showing For Fries
Pros: I’ll admit, overall these are a pretty good bite of a fast food loaded fry. Sure, the fries got a little soggy, but that’s kind of the charm of loaded food for us so I’ll even throw that in as a pro. We really enjoyed the overall flavor profile of these because it really drove home both of the dishes that Taco Bell was advertising these to be a mashup of. It takes the flavor of their irresistible nacho-inspired fries and smothers them with all of our favorite things about an enchilada.
Most of the toppings were pretty spectacular, with the freshness of the pico de gallo being a standout choice. It really gave these a broader flavor profile with a distinct bright taste that they otherwise really would’ve been missing. And the chicken that they chose in particular to be featured on these fries was honestly super impressive. The slow-roasted pulled chicken that Taco Bell has in general is pretty impressive because if its genuine chicken qualities that you usually don’t get from fast food to establishments. They really just tasted good, and the portion wasn’t so much that you couldn’t reasonably have this (or maybe even share with one other person, if you’re feeling generous) alongside the rest of your Taco Bell meal.
Cons: Personally, the thing I feared about these fries in particular was valid. The reduced-fat sour cream didn’t make sense with these fries. Not only conceptually is it confusing to choose this one ingredient in a very indulgent side to be made lower calorie, but it genuinely tastes worse. Reduced-fat sour cream taste watery and its creaminess is one of the only reasons sour cream is so lovely to begin with it. Its assertive creaminess and lactic flavor is really lost with the reduced-fat version that Taco Bell is using on these fries though.
I do think that is a little bit confusing as well that Taco Bell decided to use nacho cheese and shredded cheese because it does feel a little bit redundant. But honestly, the flavor of them is pretty different and conceptually, it does make sense because of the two dishes they’re bringing together for these loaded fries.
