This year continues to be rich with big launches and promises from Burger King, and they don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. From the revamped Whopper, their limited release of the elusive crown-shaped nuggets, and even their dip into the world of fashion just this week, Burger King has been on a roll with its releases.

Perhaps one of the most intriguing releases that came to Burger King this year was a change that didn’t produce anything completely new, but reworked one of the most essential fast food items to be a new-and-improved version of itself. Burger King redid the recipe for their chicken nuggets, and, starting September 1, they’ve been on the market.

The nuggets are made with white-meat chicken filling and a “improved batter.” But after seeing some mixed reviews on socials, we knew we would have to try out this new recipe for ourselves so that we can let you all know if Burger King die-hards will need to find a new classic or stick to their faves. Here’s what we thought.

Our Official Sporked Review

Okay, we’ll be the first to admit that the Burger King nuggets have never really been our favorites. It’s just thatout of all of the fast food options, why would you go somewhere with burger to get chicken? And, when you live near Chick-fil-A, there’s simply no reason to go anywhere else. But hey, we were still open to this launch bringing us in as fans of their nuggets, too.

While lot of comments on Reddit noted that these nuggets were stale in texture, that wasn’t necessarily our experience. But the employee at serving us did inform us that our order had just come out of the fryer, so that surely had something to do with our experience. As always with fast food, things can vary a lot depending on which location and franchise you go to.

To see what other people had said, we left them out for just 10 minutes to see how these what age after downing our the first few. And honestly, we get it. The strangely crumby coating that they used to make these isn’t necessarily well suited to lasting for a long period of time after they come out of the fryer. For it to have gotten soggy and a bit stale tasting after only 10 minutes, it wasn’t necessarily something we were super impressed with.

The interior of the nuggets was much superior and juicier than the previous nuggets they served, which was greatly appreciated. While we want a crispy nugget, we don’t necessarily want a dry piece of chicken either. And the interior of these wasn’t dry in the slightest. They were a bit spongy in a way that wasn’t distinctly bad, but it really did highlight the fact that these aren’t made from real, whole pieces of chicken.

The seasoning also deteriorated a bit in quality from the previous nuggets. Where they used to be very well seasoned with pepper and generally they had enough salt on them too, these could not have been said the same for. Since we know that BK’s nugget seasoning was a lot of the attraction for customers in the first place, I would say this is a pretty big loss.

Ultimately, we downed a whole pack and the new Special Savory Sauce released with these certainly helped with that. As you would expect, it’s a special savory addition to your nuggets that tasted like a mix of mayonnaise, ketchup, herbs, and spices creating something that felt reminiscent of Cane’s Sauce. We’d definitely order these nuggets again, but if we were specifically craving chicken nuggets, I can’t say that we would be seeking these out as our number one choice.
