I’m not sure who was asking for this, but you can now buy Wendy’s square ground beef burger patties at the grocery store. Yes, if you’re lucky enough to live in one of two very specific cities, you can make your very own Wendy’s dinner at home. Some weeks, I review candy; some weeks, I spend the cost of four real Baconators to make four of my own facsimiles. Let’s find out whether you really can taste the “fresh, never frozen” difference at home.

Wendy’s Ground Beef Patties

Pros: These do remind me of Wendy’s burgers—for better or for worse. With these burger patties and the new Wendy’s double-smoked bacon strips (yes, I reviewed those as well), I successfully made a perfunctory Baconator substitute at home. Wendy’s founder (and Ohio’s own) Dave Thomas was a modern saint and I hope some money from the sale of these burgers is going towards his foundation.

Cons: Here’s the problem: These patties are exclusive to Kroger, which means they’re sold right next to Kroger’s solid variety of same-price-or-cheaper Private Selection premade patties. For authenticity’s sake, I didn’t add any of the world’s best burger seasoning (onion soup mix, accept no substitutes) to the Wendy’s patties, which means these burgers were pretty bland. If you’re gonna spend the money on premade burger patties, I would not pick these over any pre-seasoned option.

Conclusion: Wendy’s has never been my favorite fast-food burger, and these at-home alternatives are not my favorite at-home burger. Let’s figure out a kitchen counter-sized Frosty machine instead.

Where can I get Wendy’s Ground Beef Patties?

For now, Wendy’s patties are only being sold in very specific places. If you’re in Denver, Colorado or Columbus, Ohio, you can head to your local King Soopers or Kroger store to find these burger patties. I found mine in a segregated refrigerator case under a miasma of burger-shaped balloons.
