You can do a lot with In-N-Out’s secret menu (which, just in case it bears repeating one more time, isn’t actually that secret at all) – even if its employees sometimes don’t like knocking up some of the stuff you ask for. You can even get a burger for your dog, for god’s sake. Most of the time, though, people are going for good old Animal Style. It’s predictably delicious, it’s not too much of a variation on the form, and it’s approved by Gordon Ramsay – so it’s hard to go wrong with it.

Now, though, it seems like people are getting bored of Animal Style, and they’re reaching for something else entirely. Gorilla Style. Yep. It’s a thing, and we’re gonna talk about it.
Still Animal, Just Slightly More Specific
Gorilla Style at In-N-Out really is off-menu, folks, and if you’re going to try your burgers in this fashion, you need to know what you’re getting. Basically, Gorilla Style is an “everything and the kitchen sink” approach, by which I mean that it’s messy, over-the-top, and quite difficult to eat. It’s a burger with extra meat, extra cheese, extra spread, and extra fries, in the sandwich itself. It’s not actually recognized by In-N-Out staff, so you shouldn’t expect them to make a Gorilla Style burger for you – and that’s because there’s a lot going on. You have to put it together yourself. We recommend not doing this in your car, unless you want to spend the next few weeks cleaning cheese drips off the seats.
If you’re hankering to try a Gorilla Style burger, here’s how it’s done: You order a regular Double-Double with grilled onions, a Flying Dutchman from the secret menu (which is basically just two patties and two cheese slices), and Animal Style fries. Open the hamburger, put the Flying Dutchman inside, add some fries, and close it up by putting the bun back on top. You’ll end up with four patties, four slices of cheese, and fries covered in more cheese and sauce.
Is It Worth It?
Honestly? That depends entirely on whether you think overblown, messy burgers are worth it. We can see the appeal of this, but it feels a little too close to Wendy’s infamous T-Rex burger for our liking – ie, a sandwich that looks fun in pictures, but which is ultimately impossible to eat. You can reduce the size of your Gorilla Style burger by just ordering a regular cheeseburger (which will then give you three patties), but even then, it’s gonna get messy. It also runs the risk of its taste just turning into one big mass of meat.
If you’re into viral food trends, though, this one will be for you. Just don’t expect the employees to react that favorably if you ask them to assemble it for you – and they probably won’t.
