What Flavor Is Juicy Fruit Gum?

While many prefer a spearmint or wintergreen gum to chew as a breath freshener, true gum aficionados know that there are more interesting, unique flavors out there. One such gum is that yellow-packaged stalwart you know and love: Juicy Fruit. A gum renowned for its distinctive and iconic flavor…but what flavor is Juicy Fruit gum, exactly? Today, we’ll take a look at what makes Juicy Fruit so juicy and so fruity.

What flavors are in Juicy Fruit gum?

The precise Juicy Fruit gum flavor has been a closely guarded secret of the Wrigley company that has fueled speculation and curiosity among consumers.

But while the exact combination of ingredients remains undisclosed, the general consensus from the flavor detectives (or “gumshoes”) is that it boasts a tropical and citrusy profile with hints of banana and pineapple. Some even say they detect a bit of jackfruit in there, too. One very dedicated fan emailed Wrigley asking what the Juicy Fruit flavor was, and received this response:

This brand is flavored with a combination of natural and artificial flavors, but I’m afraid we can’t be very specific because, for competitive reasons, we consider our Juicy Fruit flavoring formula to be a trade secret. I can, however, tell you that the mixture of fruit flavors in Juicy Fruit is comprised of predominately lemon, orange, pineapple and banana notes.

Sincerely yours,

WM. WRIGLEY JR. COMPANY

So, there you have it. The Juicy Fruit flavor is a combo of lemon, orange, pineapple, and banana.

Where did Juicy Fruit originate?

Juicy Fruit’s origins trace back to 1893 when Wrigley started packaging it with baking soda as a free gift-with-purchase. However, the gum soon eclipsed the popularity of the baking powder, prompting Wrigley to shift focus to gum production.Sorry to any strange children out there who may have preferred baking powder over gum!
