I have a confession to make: I have never been to a Wienerschnitzel. I know. It’s a California classic AND the “world’s largest hot dog chain” with more than 320 locations in 11 states, as their website informs me. But don’t you worry your hot dog-loving head, I still went to the little local hot dog cart in my hometown. Trust me, I am no hot dog-hating heathen. It’s just that we didn’t have a Wienerschnitzel in town, and now in every town I have lived in, I have never lived near enough to one that it would be more convenient than a Costco dog. That said, if you, like me, live in a veritable Wiener desert, then get your schnit(zel) together and head over to the grocery store, because starting this month, you can get two different kinds of Wienerschnitzel-branded corn dogs right at your very own neighborhood supermarket.
What are the corn dog flavors? I didn’t even know corn dogs came in “flavors”? What else do they sell at a Wienerschnitzel besides wieners? Schnitzel, perhaps?
Here’s the sitch: The two flavors of Wienerschnitzel corn dogs coming to the frozen aisle are their classic Wienerschnitzel Original Corn Dogs, i.e. “honey batter dipped franks on a stick made with chicken; beef added,” and a flavor you can only find in grocery stores (not at their restaurant locations), Wienerschnitzel Chili Cheese Flavored Corn Dogs, i.e. “honey batter dipped chili cheese seasoned franks on a stick made with chicken; beef added and cheddar cheese.”
Now, aside from the whole “chicken; beef added” thing, these seem like pretty straightforward frozen aisle hot dogs. This makes sense, since despite the restaurant’s name (which would imply a specialization in Austrian-style cutlets), they don’t sell any schnitzel. They do sell fast food with a specialization in hot dogs (hence the wiener part), which they make daily with all the relish they can muster, or rather, they make them with various different toppings, the most popular of which involve chili cheese, which bodes well for our friend the chili cheese corn dog that just hit stores. And if you want to ketchup to those hot dog-making champs over at Wienerschnitzel, you gots to go pick some of these corn dogs up in the store.
As for where you can find them, so far, these bad boys are confirmed at Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Albertsons, and Vons, and they come in a box of 14 corn dogs. According to reviews online, Wienerschnitzel apparently knows their stuff when it comes to chili cheese-flavored fast food. That said, I myself am a bit of a corn dog purist, so I will probably go for the plain. Regardless, this first foray from Wienerschnitzel into the world of grocery store items seems pretty solid so far. Only time will tell if these new corn dogs are underdogs for a reason, or if they will have us yelling hot diggity dog!
